European Junior U20 Chess Championship 2026 will take place from August 5 to 16, 2026, in Cetinje, Montenegro. The Montenegro Chess Federation organizes the championship under the auspices of the European Chess Union.

The championship brings Europe’s leading junior chess players to Cetinje for a serious classical competition. Moreover, the event combines European titles, prize money, FIDE norms, direct title opportunities, and qualification rights for the next World Junior U20 Championship.

Players compete in two categories: Open U20 and Girls U20. Both categories use a 9-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move one.

The total prize fund is €15,000 / approx. $17,387. In addition, the championship offers medals, trophies, title opportunities, norms, and personal qualification rights for the FIDE World Junior U20 Chess Championship 2027.

Players should plan for long classical games and full scorekeeping throughout the event. Therefore, good time management and preparation will matter in every round.

The format gives junior players a serious European championship environment. In addition, the nine-game structure gives players enough rounds to compete for medals, norms, and final standings.

Players with the same score share money prizes equally. However, medals and trophies depend on final ranking after tie-breaks.

🎖️ Titles, Norms, and Qualification

The winners of the European Junior U20 Championship in the Open and Girls categories receive the personal right to participate in the FIDE World Junior U20 Chess Championship 2027, if they remain age-eligible.

Gold means first place after tie-breaks. Meanwhile, the “1st equal” title condition applies to a maximum of the three best players after tie-breaks. Norms also require nine games.

The championship has two categories.

Each ECU member federation may register one invited player in one of the categories. In addition, the players placed 1st–3rd in the 2025 European Youth U18 Open and Girls Championships also have the right to participate as invited players.

ECU member federations may also send an unlimited number of additional players in both categories. As a result, the championship can include both official invited players and additional federation entries.

The championship starts with arrivals on August 5. Then, the technical meeting, opening ceremony, and first round take place on August 6.

Most rounds start at 3:00 PM. However, the final round starts earlier, at 1:00 PM, on August 15. The organizer schedules the rest day and excursion for August 11.

Federations should download the registration files from the official event website. Then, they should complete the forms and send them to the official championship email.

The Montenegro Chess Federation organizes the European Junior U20 Chess Championship 2026 under the auspices of the European Chess Union.

The championship gives junior players a high-level classical tournament in Montenegro. Moreover, it creates a direct path toward European titles, FIDE norms, and future World Junior participation.

📍 Venue

Hotel Grand Cetinje – Njegoševa 1, 81250 Cetinje, Montenegro.

The championship takes place at Hotel Grand Cetinje, which also serves as the official tournament hotel.

The playing hall sits inside the hotel. As a result, players staying at the official hotel can reduce daily travel time and focus more easily on preparation.

🏨 Accommodation

The organizer offers accommodation and full board at Hotel Grand 3* and Apartments A Category 4*.

All participants must stay in the official hotels, and all bookings must go through the organizers.

Invited players receive free accommodation in a double room from August 5 lunch to August 16 breakfast.

The organizer arranges transfers between Podgorica Airport or Tivat Airport and the hotel.

Transfers are free for players and accredited persons on the arrival day, August 5, and the departure day, August 16. On other days, participants can order transfers for €30 per person one-way / approx. $35.

The organizer can also arrange transportation from Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia and Tirana Airport in Albania upon request.

🛂 Visa Information

Participants who need visas must submit their data by June 5, 2026.

Federations should send the registration form and PDF passport scans to the organizing committee. In addition, passports must remain valid for more than six months.

The organizers provide visa assistance according to Montenegrin national laws.

Players may file protests against arbiter decisions in writing within 30 minutes after the completion of the respective game. Each protest must include an appeals deposit of €200 / approx. $232.

If the appeal succeeds, the organizer returns the deposit. However, if the appeal fails, the organizer keeps the deposit.

Players should follow the tournament regulations, FIDE rules, anti-cheating procedures, and organizer instructions throughout the event.
