Institución Educativa ACEIMAR is a private educational organization with deep roots in Galicia, Spain. Its educational history began in Vigo in 1963, when Fernando Marcote and Elena Núñez founded the first Academia Marcote. Over the following decades, the family educational project expanded into a network covering different stages of education and operating centers in Galicia, Asturias, and Castilla y León.

📜 History and Educational Development

The wider ACEIMAR educational project traces its origin to 1963.

That year, Fernando Marcote and Elena Núñez founded the first Academia Marcote in Vigo. Their objective was to develop a private, mixed educational model based on personal attention and close involvement in each student’s development.

The project subsequently expanded beyond its original academy.

In the final months of 1991, the Colegio and Residencia CEMAR opened in Mondariz-Balneario. This created an educational and residential campus that later became closely connected with the Marcote chess program.

Today, the wider ACEIMAR network includes schools, vocational education, audiovisual training, residential education, and other educational services.

A separate legal company, Institución Educativa ACEIMAR S.L., was created in 2018. Its registered purpose centers on developing high-quality educational activities and promoting educational development. The organization adopted its present Spanish legal name in 2021.

🎓 Chess and Education

Chess has a distinctive place within the Marcote-Mondariz educational project.

Colegio Bilingüe Marcote-Mondariz includes chess among its school activities, allowing students to encounter the game within a broader educational environment rather than only through external sports clubs.

This educational connection has developed alongside a more specialized competitive structure through Escuela Internacional de Ajedrez Kasparov Marcote, commonly presented through the Ajedrez Marcote program.

The combination creates several levels of chess activity. Schoolchildren can encounter chess as part of education and extracurricular development, while competitive players can access rated tournaments, international Opens, training, and chess camps.

In 2026, the educational chess program continued with the V Torneo Escolar de Ajedrez Colegio Bilingüe Marcote, maintaining the school’s recurring tournament activity.

🏆 Abierto Internacional Institución Educativa ACEIMAR

The Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Institución Educativa ACEIMAR is the principal tournament directly carrying the institution’s name.

The series began in 2021 with the I Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Sub-2200 Institución Educativa ACEIMAR in Mondariz-Balneario. The inaugural event attracted 48 players from Spain and Portugal and established a recurring end-of-year classical tournament.

Further editions followed annually:

For its first five editions, the competition operated as a Sub-2200 tournament.

In 2026, the event expands to Sub-2400, increasing the maximum rating level and broadening the range of eligible competitors.

🏆 VI Abierto Internacional ACEIMAR 2026

The VI Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Sub-2400 Institución Educativa ACEIMAR takes place from December 4–8, 2026 in Mondariz-Balneario.

The competition is recognized by the Federación Galega de Xadrez and is valid for FIDE rating.

The tournament is played over eight Swiss-system rounds with a classical time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

Play takes place in the Hotel CEMAR complex on the Ponteareas–Mondariz road. This setting provides a combination of tournament rooms and residential facilities within the same educational environment.

Registration and tournament enquiries are handled directly through Manuel Enrique Outerelo Ucha, who serves as the principal Tournament Director and chess contact.

🌍 Ajedrez Marcote and International Chess

ACEIMAR’s chess activity is closely linked with the wider Ajedrez Marcote tradition.

Escuela Internacional de Ajedrez Kasparov Marcote has organized chess activity in Mondariz-Balneario for many years. Its program includes international Opens, youth events, training programs, school competitions, blitz tournaments, and chess camps.

The same environment also hosts the long-running Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Hotel CEMAR “Fernando Marcote in Memoriam.”

By 2026, that separate international Open had reached its 12th edition.

The Hotel CEMAR tournament and the ACEIMAR Sub-2400 Open are distinct competitions, but they share the same wider Marcote chess infrastructure and Mondariz-Balneario setting.

🎓 Chess Camps and Player Development

Training is another established part of the Marcote chess program.

International chess Opens at CEMAR have regularly been accompanied by chess camps for younger players. These programs combine tournament participation with structured chess instruction and recreational activity.

The 2026 summer program again included a chess camp alongside the XII Hotel CEMAR International Open.

This model is particularly suited to younger tournament players because accommodation, training, competition, and recreational activities can be combined within the same environment.

As a result, the ACEIMAR and Marcote chess structure works not only as a tournament venue but also as a player-development environment.
