Houston Fall FIDE uses a 5-round Swiss format. Each player receives 90 minutes for the game, plus a 30-second increment from move one.

The Championship and Under 1800 sections count for FIDE rating. Therefore, players in those sections get a useful classical chess tournament with both national and international rating value.

The Under 1400 section is US Chess-rated only. This gives lower-rated players a separate section with trophy prizes and a suitable competitive field.

US Chess monthly ratings are used for pairings. The default time is one hour.
