♟️ About Gros Xake Taldea
Gros Xake Taldea is a major chess club and training center based in Donostia / San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain. Founded in the Gros neighborhood in 1991, the organization has developed from a local chess initiative into one of the best-established competitive and educational chess structures in Gipuzkoa. The club operates from the Centro de Tecnificación de Ajedrez at the Frontón Karmelo Balda in the Anoeta sports area.
The organization combines competitive team chess, international tournaments, junior development, school programs, adult chess, coaching, and regular club activity. Its chess school works both at the Anoeta center and through schools around Donostia. Moreover, the club’s technical-development program has worked with leading players from Gipuzkoa and the French Basque Country, and its facilities have been recognized as a chess development center within the Basque sporting structure.
Tournament organization remains one of the defining parts of Gros Xake Taldea’s identity. Its flagship International Open dates back to the club’s earliest years and reached its 36th edition in 2026. In addition, Gros operates a year-round calendar of classical, rapid, blitz, youth, seasonal, and internal events. This combination of elite competition, grassroots participation, structured training, and tournament activity gives the organization a particularly broad role in Basque chess.
📜 History and Development
Gros Xake Taldea was founded at the beginning of 1991 by a group of chess enthusiasts living in the Gros neighborhood of Donostia.
Their initial objective was to promote chess and its educational benefits among local residents. One of the club’s first major initiatives was the creation of the Open de Gros, while chess classes for children were introduced at the same time.
The organization grew rapidly. Its first activities took place in premises connected with the Gros neighborhood association before the club later moved to the Manteo sports complex.
A major step followed in 2009, when Gros Xake Taldea established itself at the Centro de Tecnificación de Ajedrez in the Anoeta sports district. The move gave the club substantially stronger facilities for training, tournament organization, team matches, and educational activity.
Eliseo “Eli” Argandoña Izpura has been one of the central figures in this development, serving for many years as President, organizer, tournament director, and promoter of the club’s chess projects.
🏆 National and Basque Team Achievements
Gros Xake Taldea has an important history in Spanish team chess.
Its greatest national achievement came in 2011, when Gros became Spanish Club Champion.
The club also built a strong record in the Basque Team Championship. Its official historical palmarès records 11 Basque championship titles, together with numerous Gipuzkoa championships across different categories.
Success at national level also brought Gros into European competition. The club’s historical record includes seven appearances in the European Club Cup, where it represented Donostia and Basque chess against leading clubs from across Europe.
In 2009, the City of San Sebastián awarded Gros Xake Taldea the Medalla al Mérito Ciudadano, recognizing both its social contribution to the city and its sporting achievements.
♜ Team Chess in 2026
Team competition remains a central part of Gros Xake Taldea’s current program.
In 2026, the leading team competes in the Euskal Liga División de Honor, the highest Basque team division. Gros A finished the 2026 championship in third place.
The 2026 squad includes experienced international players together with leading Basque competitors. Players registered for Gros A include former Dutch Champion Loek van Wely, Arkadij Naiditsch, Paul Velten, Alejandro Franco Alonso, Santiago González de la Torre, and Iñigo Argandoña Riveiro.
The club also maintains considerable depth below its first team. Gros B competes in the Basque Primera División, while numerous additional teams participate in Preferente, Primera, Segunda, Tercera, and other Gipuzkoa competitions.
This structure gives players of different strengths opportunities to participate in official team chess.
🎓 Chess School and Technical Development
Chess education has been part of Gros Xake Taldea since the club’s foundation.
The club’s Escuela de Ajedrez works with large numbers of students through educational centers around Donostia as well as directly at the Anoeta chess center.
The Centro de Tecnificación provides a more advanced environment for competitive development. Historically, the program has trained leading players from Gipuzkoa and Iparralde and has worked in cooperation with chess clubs in Bayonne.
The organization also provides regular courses during the year and special summer programs. In 2026, Gros again offered summer chess classes at its Karmelo Balda facilities.
Its training role extends beyond its own membership. The Federación Vasca de Ajedrez has also selected Gros Xake Taldea’s center as a venue for official chess-coach education, including a Level I training program beginning in 2026.
🌍 Gros International Chess Open
The Nazioarteko Groseko Xake Irekia – Gros International Chess Open is the organization’s flagship tournament.
The competition began alongside the development of the club and has grown from a neighborhood Open into a long-running international event.
The 36th Gros International Chess Open took place from June 21–28, 2026 and was also held as the XXVI Memorial Javier Luengo Vázquez.
The tournament consisted of nine rounds of classical chess with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.
The 2026 edition offered a €3,300 prize fund, with prizes for the leading overall players as well as women, veterans, juniors, and several rating categories.
The Open continues to bring together international participants, strong Basque players, juniors, and experienced club competitors within the club’s own dedicated chess facilities.
🏆 Challenge GXT 2026
In 2026, Gros Xake Taldea expanded its tournament program through the Challenge GXT.
The series connects several different competitions during the year and creates an overall ranking based on players’ results across the qualifying tournaments.
Events include classical and faster time controls, giving participants opportunities to compete across different formats.
The 2026 program includes the Open de Primavera de Gros, the Donostiako Aste Nagusiko Txapelketa, the Open de Otoño de Gros, and the Open Donostia-Gros Centro Tecnificación.
The Challenge provides additional overall prizes while encouraging players to return to the Gros chess center throughout the year.
🌸 Open de Primavera de Gros
The Open de Primavera de Gros is another established part of the club’s tournament calendar.
The competition reached its 21st edition in 2026, with rounds played from April through June.
Unlike a compact weekend Open, the tournament is spread across several Saturdays. This format makes it particularly accessible to local and regional players who want rated classical competition alongside their normal weekly schedule.
The event complements the International Open by providing another substantial period of long-play chess at the Anoeta center.
⚡ Rapid, Blitz and Community Tournaments
Gros Xake Taldea organizes a wide variety of faster chess competitions throughout the year.
The 2026 calendar includes the I Donostiako Aste Nagusiko Txapelketa, a nine-round blitz tournament connected with Donostia’s summer festivities.
The club also organizes recurring social rapid competitions, youth tournaments, memorial events, and the Multitorneo series.
In June 2026, for example, Gros held the III Memorial José Manuel Cejudo, an eight-round blitz tournament. During the summer, additional rapid tournaments were organized at the club and at community celebrations around the region.
These events provide a more informal complement to the club’s classical tournament program while maintaining regular competitive activity.
🤝 Community and International Cooperation
The club’s work extends beyond formal tournament competition.
Gros Xake Taldea has a long tradition of promoting chess through schools, neighborhood activities, city festivals, youth events, and open club sessions.
Its technical-development program has also maintained cross-border relationships with chess organizations in the French Basque region, including clubs in Bayonne. These partnerships have included shared activities, players, and instructors.
The organization’s role therefore combines competitive chess with educational and social development.
In 2026, Gros also announced a new collaboration agreement with Rural Kutxa to support its sporting and educational projects.
🏛️ Organization and Current Operations
Gros Xake Taldea operates as an established sports club with Spanish tax identification number G20376604.
The club manages its chess activity from the Centro de Tecnificación at Frontón Karmelo Balda.
Eliseo “Eli” Argandoña Izpura has historically been one of the club’s principal leaders and tournament organizers. However, the club’s current public website does not publish an up-to-date executive board or identify a current President.
For the 2026 Basque team season, Iñigo Argandoña Riveiro is officially registered as Delegate and Team Captain of Gros Xake Taldea’s leading team. He is therefore the strongest currently verifiable named operational official for the organization.
General club and tournament enquiries continue to be handled through the club’s central telephone number and organizational email addresses.
