This prestigious US Chess National Championship brings together Grandmasters, International Masters, titled players, established masters, and qualifying juniors for five days of high-level classical competition.

The tournament features nine rounds in one elite section, with a guaranteed $27,500 prize fund and 150 US Chess Grand Prix points. Moreover, players can pursue GM, IM, WGM, and WIM norms through the event’s Super Swiss format. The US Masters also counts toward the FIDE Circuit 2026–2027, which adds significant international importance to the tournament.

For 2026, the organizers increased the female and senior prizes and introduced a faster classical time control of 80 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. ⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament runs for nine rounds in a Super Swiss format. Each player receives 80 minutes for the entire game plus a 30-second increment from move one.

FIDE specifically approved this shorter classical time control for the US Masters. Therefore, games remain eligible for standard rating, title norms, and FIDE Circuit purposes.

The organizer uses the November FIDE rating list for pairings and prize eligibility. Furthermore, FIDE and US Chess rate the tournament.

The Super Swiss format removes the normal federation-diversity requirement for norms under the applicable FIDE rules. However, every player must still satisfy the other performance and opponent requirements.

In addition, FIDE requires players seeking the GM, IM, WGM, or WIM title to obtain at least one qualifying Swiss norm from an event with 40 or more players.

The US Masters starts on Wednesday evening and continues through Sunday. Thursday through Saturday feature two classical rounds per day.

The organizers schedule the separate $2,000 Blitz after Round 7 on Saturday evening. If necessary, the championship playoff takes place after Round 9 on Sunday.

Entry Fees

Entry fees depend on title status and the date of registration.

GMs, IMs & WGMs

Grandmasters, International Masters, and Woman Grandmasters receive free online entry.

However, they must register by October 10 to avoid a prize deduction. Players who register later remain eligible, but the organizer deducts $200 from any prize won.

FM, WIM, WFM & NM Entry

The standard titled-player fee rises as the event approaches.

Untitled Juniors

Eligible untitled juniors with peak ratings below 2200 pay $400 more than the applicable titled-player entry fee.

Therefore, their final entry cost depends on their registration date.

GM Conditions

The organizer offers conditions to Grandmasters.

Players seeking conditions must request them by October 1 and formally confirm participation by October 10.

US Chess Membership

Every participant must maintain an active US Chess membership.

Refund Policy

The refund amount depends on when the player withdraws.

During the tournament, players must notify the organizer of a withdrawal or zero-point bye at least 90 minutes before the next round.

A player who fails to provide timely notice and then forfeits may receive a $200 fine.

Transfer to the NC Open

A US Masters player who has an unsuccessful start may withdraw and enter the concurrent North Carolina Open for $100.

However, this option applies only to players rated below 2400 FIDE who do not receive organizer conditions.

🎯 Norm Opportunities

The 2026 US Masters offers opportunities for GM, IM, WGM, and WIM norms.

The organizer uses a Super Swiss structure. Therefore, the normal federation requirement can be waived under the applicable FIDE norm rules.

However, a player still needs the required performance, opponents, titles, ratings, and other FIDE conditions.

🌍 FIDE Circuit

The 2026 US Masters appears on the official FIDE Circuit 2026–2027 calendar.

Consequently, eligible performances may contribute toward the relevant FIDE Circuit standings under the applicable Circuit regulations.

⏸️ Bye Rules

Players may request up to four optional half-point byes.

They must submit those requests by 4:00 PM on November 25.

However, a player cannot earn a title norm after taking either a half-point bye or zero-point bye.

During the tournament, participants must request zero-point byes at least 90 minutes before the relevant round.

♟️ Equipment

Charlotte Chess Center provides the boards, pieces, and clocks.

Players must use the organizer’s equipment. In addition, they must use the official scoresheets and give one copy to an arbiter after each game.

Personal scorebooks are not allowed during play.

🛡️ Fair Play & Electronic Devices

Charlotte Chess Center applies a detailed fair-play policy to its multi-day classical tournaments.

Players may not carry communication or chess-analysis devices on their person during play. This rule includes phones, smartwatches, AI glasses, Bluetooth earphones, and similar devices.

Players who bring permitted stored devices must switch them completely off. Airplane mode, silent mode, and sleep mode do not satisfy the rule.

Furthermore, the organizer may use electronic-device scans and other anti-cheating measures. Top-level CCC games may also undergo computer-assisted fair-play review before rating and norm submission.

👀 Spectator Policy

Parents, family members, and other spectators may attend the event. However, they cannot remain inside the playing halls during games.

The restriction also covers nearby hallways and designated player restrooms.

Spectators may instead use the hotel common areas and attend appropriate side events.

⚡ Free $2,000 Blitz

The separate $2,000 Blitz takes place on Saturday, November 28 at 9:00 PM.

Every US Masters participant receives free entry. The event also welcomes other players.

The Blitz Championship carries 20 US Chess Grand Prix points.
