The VII. Szentmiklós Rapid Open brings nine rounds of international rapid chess to Törökszentmiklós, Hungary, on Saturday, January 16, 2027. Hosted at the Ipolyi Cultural Centre, the seventh edition continues a local tournament series organized by Sol Oriens Kft. Players compete in one Swiss-system tournament with a time control of 12 minutes plus three seconds per move. The event combines an intensive one-day playing schedule with cash prizes for the leading finishers and additional awards for several player categories.

The published 455,000 HUF monetary prize fund covers the top five overall places and seven special categories. The champion receives 130,000 HUF, while qualifying women’s, senior, junior, and rating-category winners each compete for a 15,000 HUF award. Organizers may also stage a separate, unofficial team competition if at least six clubs register teams in advance. Despite these additional awards, the individual rapid tournament itself uses a single combined field, rather than separate age or rating sections.

The competition is designed for players who want FIDE rapid rating activity without committing to a multi-day trip. Sol Oriens has published detailed round times, registration conditions, a clear entry-fee schedule, and the venue’s address. In addition, Törökszentmiklós has railway links through Szolnok and accommodation choices for visiting players. The information below brings the tournament regulations together with practical travel and lodging details, making it easier to plan an arrival before morning registration.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

All entrants play nine Swiss-system rounds under one common ranking. Each player starts with 12 minutes on the clock and receives a three-second increment after every move. Consequently, the tournament offers rapid but fully competitive games throughout Saturday, with its last listed round starting at 3:40 PM. The format allows participants to face opponents selected through successive Swiss pairings rather than a fixed round-robin draw.

The organizer specifies the order of the tie-break criteria: Buchholz Cut-1, Buchholz, Sonneborn-Berger, and then progressive score. Players competing for an overall prize or special category should therefore be mindful that equal point totals can produce different final standings. The tournament is advertised as a FIDE rapid rating opportunity, and the published regulations also require the appropriate valid Hungarian competition license or, for overseas players, the applicable Hungarian Player License (HPL).

Playing Detail Rule
♟️ Individual sections One combined Open field
🔢 Total rounds 9
🔄 Pairing method Swiss system
⏱️ Clock setting 12 minutes + 3-second increment
🏅 Tie-break order Buchholz Cut-1; Buchholz; Sonneborn-Berger; progressive score
🌐 International player license Hungarian Player License (HPL), stated as 8,000 HUF for 365 days

Optional Club Team Competition

If at least six clubs enter teams of three or four nominated players in advance, Sol Oriens will also organize a team classification. The three highest-placed members of each team determine its standing: their final individual finishing positions are added together, and the lowest combined total ranks first. If teams tie, the placing of their best individual player breaks the tie. This is an unofficial, optional team contest and does not replace the main individual Swiss tournament.

🏆 Prize Fund

The monetary prize fund is 455,000 HUF (approximately US$1,380), comprising 350,000 HUF for the five leading overall finishers and 105,000 HUF across seven special categories. The published awards are net amounts. The champion also receives a cup, medal, and certificate, and the other leading finishers receive the additional trophies or certificates specified by the organizer.

Overall Standings

Place Cash Prize and Award
🥇 1st place 130,000 HUF; cup, medal, and certificate
🥈 2nd place 85,000 HUF; medal and certificate
🥉 3rd place 65,000 HUF; medal and certificate
🏅 4th place 45,000 HUF; certificate
🏅 5th place 25,000 HUF; certificate

Special Individual Awards

Each of the following category winners receives 15,000 HUF, a cup, and a certificate. These are special prize classifications within the combined Open tournament, not separately paired playing groups.

Category Winner’s Award
👩 Best female player 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate
♟️ Best senior (S65) 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate
📉 Best U2000 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate
📉 Best U1700 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate
🎓 Best U18 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate
🌱 Best U15 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate
⭐ Best player with no Elo rating 15,000 HUF, cup, certificate

Team Awards and Prize Draw

In the optional club team competition, the winning team receives a cup, medals, certificates, and a gift; second- and third-place teams receive medals and certificates. The organizer will also draw several gifts among participants after the awards ceremony, culminating in a large tournament chess set valued at 35,000 HUF. Every U12 player receives a commemorative certificate. These gifts and noncash awards are distinct from the announced monetary prize fund.

♟️ Sections / Groups

The tournament runs as one Open group for all eligible participants. Therefore, the women’s, senior, rating, and junior awards listed above do not create separate pairing sections; every entrant competes in the same nine-round event. This unified structure allows younger and developing players to meet opponents of different ages and strengths, while retaining special prize opportunities in their respective categories.

Clubs interested in the optional team classification should nominate their three or four members in advance. Because at least six clubs must enter for that competition to operate, team participation is separate from standard individual entry. Players should also review the stated license rules: competitors require a valid 2027 playing authorization, and overseas entrants need the applicable HPL arrangement.

📅 Schedule

All tournament activities take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027, in Hungary local time. Registration opens at 8:00 AM, followed by the opening proceedings at 9:00 AM. The first game begins at 9:20 AM, and the final scheduled round starts at 3:40 PM. A longer interval appears between the start times of Round 5 and Round 6, allowing participants time to arrange lunch or refreshments around the published program.

♟️ Organizer

Sol Oriens Kft. organizes the Szentmiklós Rapid Open, with Dr. Árpád Szalóki serving as chief organizer. The company has built a recurring program of over-the-board chess events centered on Törökszentmiklós and the wider Szolnok area. Its work includes the Szentmiklós classical and rapid series as well as community-oriented rapid competitions staged with local cultural partners.

The sixth Szentmiklós Rapid Open took place in January 2026, using the same nine-round rapid format and 12+3 time control. In August 2026, Sol Oriens also organized the second Szentmiklós Open, a seven-round classical tournament hosted at the Ipolyi Cultural Centre. These recurring events give visiting players opportunities to compete in the region across different time controls and tournament lengths.

The 2027 rapid tournament is supported by the Municipality of Törökszentmiklós and operates under the patronage of the city’s mayor, Imre Markót. National Arbiter Katalin Kántor is named as the tournament arbiter in the official announcement. For the organization’s wider activity and its previous listings, visit the Sol Oriens organizer profile on MyChess.Events.

📍 Venue

Ipolyi Közművelődési Központ

Pánthy Endre út 2–6, 5200 Törökszentmiklós, Hungary.

The tournament takes place at the city’s Ipolyi Cultural Centre, part of the Ipolyi Arnold cultural, library, and local-history institution. The building serves as a municipal cultural venue for exhibitions, performances, educational programs, and public events. Consequently, it offers an established indoor setting for a full day of tournament chess, with the venue centrally located in Törökszentmiklós.

The cultural center confirms the same street address on its official contact page. Participants should navigate to Pánthy Endre út 2–6 rather than to another site operated by the institution. The tournament regulations state that a buffet is available at the venue, while meals are arranged individually; several food outlets also operate in the town.

🏨 Accommodation

Players coming from outside the area may prefer to arrive on Friday evening before the 8:00 AM Saturday check-in. Törökszentmiklós offers guesthouses and smaller lodging properties rather than a large city-center hotel district. The following properties have published addresses and direct contact routes. Guests should make arrangements with their chosen property, especially when traveling as a family or with a club group.

👥 Fenyőszálló Magánszálláshely Budai Nagy Antal utca 1, 5200 Törökszentmiklós; +36 70 386 3851

Almásy Vendégház

Almásy Vendégház provides a range of room types, including twin, double, triple, and four-person rooms. Each room has its own bathroom, and the property describes Wi-Fi, air conditioning, parking, and a wellness area among its facilities. Its larger room configurations make it a useful first property to contact for parents accompanying young players or small groups traveling together. Information about rooms and reservations appears on the guesthouse’s official website.

Tuja Panzió

Tuja Panzió is listed at Pánthy Endre út 60, on the same named road as the tournament venue. This gives players a convenient address to compare when considering a local stay. Contact the property using the published phone number to discuss the desired overnight arrangement and room requirements.

Fenyőszálló Magánszálláshely

Fenyőszálló is a private lodging option with shared-room configurations that can suit a small chess club or group. The published property description lists three five-bed rooms and two three-bed rooms, together with facilities such as internet access and air conditioning. Groups can contact the operator directly to discuss a suitable arrangement for the night before the tournament.

🚆 How to Get There

Törökszentmiklós is in eastern Hungary, in Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, east of Szolnok. The tournament venue is at Pánthy Endre út 2–6, close to the town’s main streets. Railway travel is practical for many domestic entrants, while drivers can approach the town using the M4 expressway corridor and local roads.

✈️ From Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport

International visitors commonly enter Hungary through Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. Bus 200E links Terminal 2 to Ferihegy railway station, where passengers can connect with MÁV rail services serving the Szolnok corridor. Depending on the available train, continue toward Szolnok and Törökszentmiklós, changing trains where the timetable requires it. The airport’s rail access guidance explains this connection.

Because Saturday play starts early, an arrival in Hungary on Friday provides a more comfortable margin for international players. The final leg from Törökszentmiklós railway station to the cultural center can be completed by local taxi or a planned town-center transfer.

🚆 By Train from Budapest or Szolnok

Törökszentmiklós lies on the railway corridor linking Budapest and eastern Hungary via Szolnok. Trains from Budapest-Nyugati and services connecting at Szolnok can serve the local station, but departure patterns differ by service and date. Consult the official MÁV journey planner for January 16 departures and return journeys. Passengers should enter Törökszentmiklós as their destination and make a separate plan for the venue transfer.

🚗 By Road

Drivers traveling from Budapest can follow the M4 expressway corridor toward Szolnok and Törökszentmiklós, then use local roads toward Pánthy Endre út. From the town center, the full venue address should be used for the final approach. Check any local parking arrangements and traffic restrictions before arrival, particularly if several members of a club are traveling in one vehicle.

🚶 Final Arrival at the Venue

The Ipolyi Arnold Cultural Centre occupies the Pánthy Endre út 2–6 address. Look for the cultural-center entrance and tournament registration area when you arrive. Because registration begins at 8:00 AM and the opening is scheduled for 9:00 AM, allow time to locate the correct room before entering the first round.

Refreshments and Prize Ceremony

A buffet is available at the competition venue, and participants arrange their own main meals. The awards ceremony follows the end of play and includes the official cash prizes, special awards, optional club-team prizes, and gift drawing. Under-12 competitors receive commemorative certificates. The organizer also advises that photographs and video may be taken during the competition as part of event documentation.
