♟️ About Biel-Bienne CHESS

Biel-Bienne CHESS is the organizing body behind the Biel International Chess Festival, held annually in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. The festival began in 1968 and has developed into one of Europe’s longest-running major chess festivals. Its principal venue is the Biel/Bienne Congress Center, where elite invitationals, international Opens, youth competitions, rapid, blitz, and alternative-format tournaments are staged together within a single summer program.

The organization manages a particularly broad competition portfolio. Its flagship events include the Masters Triathlon, Masters Open (MTO), Amateur Open (ATO), Generations Challenge, Fast Standard tournaments, Freestyle/Chess960 competitions, rapid and blitz Opens, youth tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, and chess-problem solving events. The festival is distinctive because elite grandmasters and amateur competitors share the same overall event environment. Biel/Bienne has also hosted three historic FIDE Interzonal tournaments, in 1976, 1985, and 1993.

Peter Bohnenblust serves as President of the Organizing Committee, while Paul Kohler is Festival Director and the principal operational leader of the event. Tatjana Kraska Horvath manages the festival secretariat, and Laurent Freyd directs the invitational tournaments. The 59th Biel International Chess Festival, held from July 11–24, 2026, attracted 820 participants from 50 countries. GM Levon Aronian won the Masters Triathlon on his Biel debut, while Václav Finek won the Generations Challenge and 14-year-old IM Christian Glöckler captured the Masters Open. The 60th Biel Chess Festival is scheduled for July 10–23, 2027.

📜 International Chess in Biel Since 1968

The Biel tournament tradition began in 1968, when Hans Suri organized the first International Open of the Biel Chess Club. The inaugural competition attracted 34 players from nine countries, with Swiss IM Edwin Bhend taking first place.

The festival expanded steadily during the 1970s. In 1975, it moved into the Biel Congress Center, which remains its principal playing venue today.

Biel reached a new international level when it hosted the 1976 FIDE Interzonal, won by Bent Larsen. The city later staged further Interzonals in 1985 and 1993, with the latter becoming the final Interzonal tournament in World Championship history.

An annual elite Grandmaster invitation tournament was introduced in 1977. Since then, many of the strongest players of successive generations have competed in Biel, including World Champions and leading Candidates-level grandmasters.

🌟 Biel Masters and Triathlon Format

The elite invitation tournament remains the festival’s most visible competition. Since 2019, Biel has used an innovative Triathlon format, combining classical, rapid, and blitz chess within one overall standings system.

The 2026 Masters Triathlon featured an international field including Levon Aronian, Lê Quang Liêm, Matthias Blübaum, Nodirbek Yakubboev, Yağız Kaan Erdoğmuş, and Aydin Süleymanli.

Aronian won the tournament with 29.5 combined points. He remained undefeated in all eight of his classical games while producing particularly strong results in rapid and blitz chess.

The parallel Generations Challenge provides a second invitational platform for emerging international players. In 2026, Václav Finek won ahead of Xiao Tong and Marco Materia.

🏆 Masters Open and Amateur Chess

The Masters Open (MTO) is the festival’s principal international Swiss tournament. It provides serious classical competition for titled players, ambitious juniors, and competitors seeking international title norms.

The 2026 MTO consisted of 10 rounds and attracted 94 players representing 29 countries. Fourteen-year-old German IM Christian Glöckler produced the tournament’s standout performance, securing first place before the final round. IM Cao Qingfeng finished second, while GM Adam Kozak took third.

The Amateur Open (ATO) runs alongside the Masters Open for players below the specified rating ceiling. Dimitrios Alexakis won the 2026 edition.

Additional tournament formats allow participants to build their own festival schedule. These include Fast Standard chess, rapid, blitz, Freestyle/Chess960, Total Chess, youth competitions, and one-day events.

🎓 Youth and Accessible Chess

Biel-Bienne CHESS places junior chess directly alongside its elite competitions. The VINETUM Youth Tournament provides dedicated competition for young players, while junior categories and prizes also feature throughout the Open program.

The festival’s structure is intentionally broad. A developing junior can compete in the same Congress Center where world-class grandmasters are playing the Masters Triathlon, while club players can choose tournaments according to rating, available time, and preferred format.

This model helped the 2026 festival reach 820 participants from 50 countries, a modern-era record for international representation at Biel.

🏛️ Organization and Festival Team

The current organization is headed by Peter Bohnenblust, President of the Organizing Committee.

Paul Kohler serves as Festival Director and directs the operational tournament program. Laurent Freyd is responsible for the invitational tournaments, while Tatjana Kraska Horvath manages the Secretariat.

Dennis Briechle oversees media and communications, while the festival maintains a separate arbiter coordination team for pairings, check-in, and competition matters.

Planning has already moved to the next milestone. The 60th Biel International Chess Festival is scheduled for July 10–23, 2027, marking six decades of one of Switzerland’s most enduring international chess events.
