The congress uses three distinct rating sections and publishes a fixed five-round timetable. Selected boards are scheduled for live broadcast, adding spectator and preparation value to the leading games.

Players need current ECF Gold membership or another membership status accepted under the entry conditions. Entrants should verify their eligibility before paying, particularly when relying on a non-ECF federation arrangement.

The 300-point gap between the Major and Knights ceilings creates three clearly differentiated competitive levels. A player should compare the congress rating basis with the number shown on the entry form, because an outdated personal estimate can lead to entry in the wrong section.

🏆 Prize Fund

The confirmed cash prize fund totals £2,925 / approx. $3,875. Each section includes principal place awards and selected rating, women, or junior prizes.

Open £750 and £300; £75 under 2050; £100 women; £50 junior
Major under 1930 £450 and £200; £75 under 1750; £50 women; £50 junior
Knights under 1630 £450 and £200; £75 under 1550; £50 women; £50 junior

The organizer’s published rules determine eligibility when a player qualifies for more than one category. Rating limits and category definitions should be checked against the congress entry page before selecting a section.

⏰ Time Control & Pairings

The Open uses 110 minutes plus a 10-second increment for every move. The Major and Knights sections use 90 minutes plus a 15-second increment for every move.

All sections play five rounds. The Friday evening start is followed by two sessions on Saturday and two on Sunday, creating a standard British weekend-congress rhythm.

Entrants should bring any equipment required by the congress conditions and arrive before each scheduled round. Selected games may be broadcast live.

The Open’s 110+10 clock setting gives a slightly longer base period, while Major and Knights use 90+15. Both controls provide increment from move one, but they demand different pacing during the opening and early middlegame.

Late fee after August 18 Additional £10
Late fee after August 20 Additional £15

Entry questions may be sent to julian.clissold1946@outlook.com.

The fee reductions for women and juniors apply before the escalating late supplements. Registering after August 18 can therefore erase part or all of the discount, making the final days significantly more expensive than the standard £45 entry.

The standard fee is £45. Women and juniors receive a £10 reduction. Late supplements begin after August 18. A larger supplement applies after August 20. The organizer deducts £5 from an eligible refund. Membership status must be valid for the congress.

The Manchester Chess Federation organizes the summer congress and manages the sections, entries, pairings, rating submissions, and prize payments.

📍 Venue

University of Bolton Arena – Arena Approach, Horwich, Bolton BL6 6LB, United Kingdom.

The arena offers free parking for congress participants and sits beside the Horwich transport and retail corridor. Drinks and snacks are sold in the café, while outside food cannot be consumed inside the arena.

Horwich Parkway offers the most direct rail approach for many visitors. Players staying in central Manchester should check the last convenient return service after the Friday round and should not assume that every train continues at the same frequency late in the evening.

🏨 Accommodation

The event information identifies nearby lodging options, including the Whites Hotel and Premier Inn in the Horwich area. Staying close to the arena can simplify the Friday evening arrival and both Sunday sessions.

Room prices and availability are controlled by the hotels. Players should book directly, verify breakfast hours against the 10:00 weekend rounds, and confirm parking conditions before finalizing a reservation.

🚗 How to Get There

By rail Horwich Parkway station is close to the arena and has services toward Manchester and the wider North West.
By car Use the M61 and local Horwich approaches, then follow signs for the University of Bolton Arena. Free event parking is available under the published venue arrangements.
By air Manchester Airport is the main international gateway, with onward rail or road travel to Horwich.

Friday-evening traffic can be heavy around Greater Manchester. Allow a margin beyond the normal journey time so that registration and board location do not delay Round 1.

Manchester Summer Congress combines accessible sectioning, a strong prize fund, and a practical arena venue for a complete summer weekend.
