The Japan Open 2026 takes place from November 21–25, 2026 at X Wave Makuhari in Chiba City. The Japan Chess Federation organizes a nine-round international standard tournament with separate Master and Challenger categories and a total capacity of 180 players.

Both categories play 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move and are rated for both FIDE and Japanese national standard ratings. Master is designed for players rated 2000+, while Challenger has a detailed ticket structure for Japan Chess Federation members, foreign chess nationality players and unrated entrants.

The published cash prizes total ¥835,000 / approx. $5,270 across Master overall prizes, Master women’s prizes and Challenger overall prizes, before non-cash ChessMood and Chess.com awards. The event also includes strict electronic-device rules, a business-casual dress code, appeals procedures and accommodation attached to the venue.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Both Master and Challenger play nine Swiss rounds at 90+30. Pairings are produced with Swiss-Manager and starting order is based on the November 2026 FIDE Standard list, followed by national rating, title and alphabetical order when needed.

Tie-Breaks

Byes

Pre-registered bye requests must be submitted by 6:00 PM on the day before the tournament. A player with more than three requested byes is not eligible for prizes. In Challenger, a timely pre-requested bye normally scores 0.5; a late bye scores 0, and byes in the final two rounds score 0. A pairing-allocated bye scores one point.

Default & Electronics

The default time is 30 minutes. Mobile phones, tablets, cameras, smartwatches and other electronic devices are strictly prohibited in the playing hall, even switched off inside a bag. The organizer provides a deposit booth for devices. A violation results in immediate loss of the game under the event rule.

Cash prizes are not shared; tie-breaks determine the standings. Challenger also awards Chess.com Diamond memberships to the top 10 eligible non-title-holders: six months for first, three months for second–third and one month for fourth–tenth.

Japan Championship Qualification

The top five Master players whose chess nationality is Japan receive seeds for the Japan Chess Championship 2026 under the published rules.

Master Category – Limit 50

Up to three eligible Japanese-chess-nationality Challenger players rated 1900+ may be admitted to Master under special U18 / Japan Chess Classic / highest-rated applicant criteria, after paying the fee difference.

Challenger Category

The Challenger has published limits of approximately 80 Ticket-A places, 40 rated Ticket-B places and 10 unrated Ticket-B places, subject to organizer adjustment. Players without a FIDE ID must obtain one through their federation and notify the organizer at least two weeks before the tournament.

Registration Period

Registration and payment are handled through Peatix. JCF members must keep membership valid through the final tournament day. Ticket-A applicants who need membership registration/renewal must complete the process by the organizer’s stated November 7 deadline.

Cancellation

Cancellations received by 11:59 PM on November 7 receive a full refund under the published policy. Cancellations from 12:00 AM on November 8 are non-refundable. Peatix processing rules apply.

Waiting List

When normal tickets sell out, Peatix may offer a same-price waiting-list ticket. Open places are offered in purchase order through November 15; if a place does not become available, the waitlist payment is refunded.

Players must show the QR code on their Peatix e-ticket at the venue.

X Wave Makuhari – Makuhari Techno Garden A Building, 1-3 Nakase, Mihama-ku, Chiba City, Japan.

The venue is approximately 3 minutes on foot from JR Keiyō Line Kaihin-Makuhari Station, North Exit, and about 10 minutes on foot from Makuhari Messe. Food and drink are restricted inside the tournament area except bottled hydration and light snacks such as candy or chocolate.

🏨 Accommodation

Players who have completed tournament entry may apply to stay at the accommodation facility attached to the venue. Pricing and application procedures are published separately by the Japan Chess Federation, so participants should use the official event page for the active booking details.

🚆 How to Get There

Kaihin-Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyō Line is the main public-transport gateway. The approximately three-minute walk from the North Exit makes rail the simplest option for many participants travelling from Tokyo or elsewhere in the metropolitan area.

International visitors can reach the Chiba/Makuhari area from Narita or Haneda airports by rail or airport-bus services. Check current schedules because airport connections and transfer times vary by route.

ℹ️ Other Information

Appeals

An appeal against an arbiter decision must be submitted in writing and signed, with a ¥20,000 deposit. The deposit is refunded if the appeal succeeds; otherwise it is forfeited. Appeals Committee members are announced at the Technical Meeting.

Dress Code

Business casual or smart casual attire is required. The regulations prohibit shorts, slippers, sunglasses, sports caps and revealing clothing.

Game & Media Rules

The organizer provides clocks, sets and score sheets. Players must record games, verify and sign the result sheet, and report the result to an arbiter. Results, game scores, photographs, video and live broadcast material may be published under the event’s media-consent rules. Prize winners absent from the award ceremony can lose prize rights unless staff approve the absence in advance.
