♟️ About Japan Chess Federation

Japan Chess Federation (JCF) is the national governing body for chess in Japan and the country’s only federation recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The present organization was established in February 2019 and represents Japanese chess internationally while administering national membership, ratings, official tournaments, registered clubs, player selection, and chess-development programs. Its administrative base is in Shinagawa, Tokyo, while Chess Center UENO provides an additional physical center for federation activities, lessons, and events. The federation organizes Japan’s principal national competitions, including the Japan Chess Championship, Japan Women’s Chess Championship, Japan Senior Chess Championship, Japan Youth and Cadets Championships, Japan Team Chess Championship, Japan Rapid Chess Championship, and the international Japan Open. It also maintains Japan’s national rating system, approves tournaments organized by registered clubs, supports regional qualifiers, develops arbiters, provides beginner and youth programs, and selects players to represent Japan in international competition. As of July 1, 2026, JCF reported 1,166 members, while its national calendar includes events throughout Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kobe, Kyoto, and other regions. Hiroshi Manabe is the current President and Representative Director of Japan Chess Federation, a position he has held since 2023. Directors Taro Shinoda and Yumi Harashima also serve in the current leadership structure. The federation enters a particularly important period in September 2026 as Team Japan prepares for the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand from September 15–27. Domestically, the autumn calendar includes the Japan Team Chess Championship on October 10–11, the Japan Rapid Chess Championship on October 24–25, and the flagship Japan Open from November 21–25, 2026.

📜 Federation Development

The current Japan Chess Federation was founded in February 2019 to provide a unified national organization for chess in Japan and represent the country within FIDE. Since its establishment, JCF has expanded its tournament program, membership system, registered-club network, national ratings, online communication, and international representation. It also operates Chess Center UENO, which hosts chess lessons, introductory activities, seminars, and smaller competitions. The federation currently relies on a substantial volunteer structure. In August 2026, JCF reported that approximately 40 volunteer staff members were working across its operational teams. This structure supports tournament organization, ratings, communications, international events, youth development, arbiting, and administrative work.

🏆 Japan Chess Championship

The Japan Chess Championship is the federation’s principal national classical competition. The Japan Chess Championship 2026 – The 27th Argentina Cup took place from May 2–6, 2026 at Curian in Shinagawa, Tokyo. The championship featured 67 players competing over nine rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, with both FIDE and Japanese national standard rating. CM Kan Nakahara won the championship with 7.5/9, finishing ahead of IM Tran Thanh Tu on 7 points. IM Shinya Kojima placed third. Nakahara therefore earned the title of Japan Chess Champion 2026 and received the Argentina Cup. His victory also made him eligible for selection to Japan’s team for the 2028 Chess Olympiad.

🌍 International Chess and Team Japan

Representing Japan internationally is one of JCF’s central responsibilities. The federation selects national teams and individual representatives for FIDE, Asian, youth, senior, university, and other international championships. For the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Japan’s Open team consists of IM Shinya Kojima, IM Ryosuke Nanjo, FM Shou Otsuka, IM Thanh Tu Tran, and FM Kohei Yamada. GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan serves as coach. The Women’s team includes Elizabeth Ivanov, Ami Kato, Kanako Kinoshita, WCM Rikka Mitsuyama, and WCM Azumi Sakai, with GM Mihajlo Stojanovic as coach. The federation is also running a crowdfunding and promotional campaign around Team Japan and plans to provide live coverage of its Olympiad matches through its official channels.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

JCF operates national championships for both Youth and Cadet age groups. The Japan Youth Chess Championship 2026 covered U14, U16, and U18 players, while the parallel Cadets Championship provided U8, U10, and U12 competition. Beyond championships, the federation runs Rookies Time, Level-Up tournaments, beginner courses, summer children’s tournaments, chess schools, and other activities designed to create a pathway from introductory chess to official rated competition. In August 2026, JCF launched a special youth-development program in cooperation with Freedom Asian Chess Initiatives (FACI), the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, FIDE, and the Asian Chess Federation. Selected Japanese juniors receive online international coaching together with an intensive five-day training program at Chess Center UENO. The initiative focuses on strategy, calculation, middlegames, endgames, tournament decision-making, and preparation for international competition.

♜ National Tournament Network

The federation’s tournament system extends well beyond events organized directly by JCF. Registered clubs throughout Japan organize competitions that can receive national and FIDE rating under federation regulations. The 2026 national calendar includes tournaments in regions such as Hokkaido, Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Aichi, Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo, Hiroshima, and Kyushu. Regional championships also serve as qualifiers for the Japan Chess Championship. One of the largest completed events outside Tokyo was the Japan Chess Classic 2026, held from August 9–12 at Osaka City Central Public Hall. The seven-round FIDE-rated tournament attracted 194 players. IM Hafiz Arif Abdul won with 6/7, ahead of a strong field that included several International Masters and FIDE Masters.

🌟 Japan Open 2026

The Japan Open is one of the federation’s most important international tournaments. The Japan Open 2026 is scheduled for November 21–25, 2026 at X Wave Makuhari in Chiba City. The event will use nine classical rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. Players will compete in Master and Challenger categories, with both sections receiving FIDE and Japanese national standard rating. The total tournament capacity is 180 players. The published cash prize fund is ¥835,000, with additional non-cash awards. The Master category is designed primarily for players rated 2000 and above, creating an opportunity for stronger Japanese players to compete against international opposition. The 2026 edition is supported by the FIDE Development Fund, while MUSCAT GROUP Co., Ltd. has joined as tournament sponsor.

⚡ Team and Rapid Championships

The Japan Team Chess Championship 2026 will take place on October 10–11 at Curian in Tokyo. The tournament has capacity for up to 70 teams and includes incentives for registered clubs, university chess organizations, U22 teams, and clubs travelling from outside the main Tokyo region. Two weeks later, JCF will stage the Japan Rapid Chess Championship from October 24–25, 2026, also at Curian. The Rapid Championship will consist of nine rounds and will include an Open category together with an award group for players rated below 1700. Consequently, the autumn calendar offers national-level opportunities in team, rapid, and classical chess before the Japan Open closes the federation’s major tournament season.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Hiroshi Manabe serves as President and Representative Director of Japan Chess Federation. A long-time competitive player and chess educator, he joined the federation’s board in 2022 and became President in 2023. The current Board also includes Taro Shinoda and Yumi Harashima as Directors, while Taro Ozawa serves as Auditor. Yumiko Hiebert is listed as the federation’s Founder, and Akihiro Yamada serves as Advisor. The federation’s combination of national championships, club support, ratings, youth programs, international representation, educational initiatives, and a growing tournament calendar continues to expand organized chess throughout Japan.
