Chess England is a UK chess tournament organization led by IA/IO Adam N Raoof. It runs regular over-the-board competitions in London and other locations across England. In addition, the organization works with chess clubs, county associations, leagues, universities, and independent event partners.

Adam Raoof has served as a FIDE International Organizer since 2001. He became a FIDE Arbiter in 2005 and earned the International Arbiter title in 2013. Moreover, FIDE lists him as a licensed Category C International Arbiter. He has also served as captain of the England Open team at the Chess Olympiad.

Chess England appears in the English Chess Federation rating system as a congress organization. Adam Raoof serves as its principal official, while experienced arbiters and rating officers support its events. Therefore, the organization can manage competitions from registration through final rating submission.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events

Chess England organizes a broad program of FIDE- and ECF-rated tournaments. Its recurring London events include the Golders Green FIDE Rapid, Muswell Hill FIDE competitions, Hendon Blitz and Rapid events, and the Middlesex County Chess Association Blitz. In addition, it supports London Chess League weekend congresses at the Mindsports Centre in Hammersmith.

The organization also runs major weekend congresses outside its regular London venues. Its 2026 program includes competitions in Northampton, Birmingham, and Silvertown. Moreover, Chess England organizes a congress at the Army & Navy Club in Pall Mall. These events normally offer several rating sections, published schedules, guaranteed prizes, and formal rating submission.

Chess England has also developed tournament partnerships outside the United Kingdom. For example, it co-organizes FIDE weekenders in Ghent and promotes events in Rotterdam. As a result, players can enter both domestic and international competitions through the same organizer network.

Formats include standard, rapid, and blitz chess. Many events use separate Open, Major, Minor, and lower-rated sections. Therefore, players can choose a group that matches their rating and experience. Chess England also works with FIDE and ECF requirements covering eligibility, membership, pairings, time controls, arbitration, and reporting.

Chess England aims to make rated tournament chess available to a wide range of players. Several recurring events welcome participants without requiring membership in a local chess club. In addition, the organizer publishes entry conditions, schedules, venue guidance, and rating requirements before each competition.

The program also includes events designed for less experienced competitors. The My First Tournament section at London Chess League congresses offers a dedicated ECF Under-1400 competition. Meanwhile, stronger players can enter FIDE-rated sections with higher rating limits and longer time controls. This structure helps players progress from introductory competition to demanding weekend congresses.

Regular rapid and blitz tournaments provide further competitive practice. For example, Golders Green hosts a monthly six-round rapid event. Hendon also hosts recurring FIDE-rated competitions. Moreover, Muswell Hill offers both rapid and standard games on selected weekdays. Therefore, players can compete frequently without waiting for a full weekend congress.
