♟️ About Icelandic Chess Federation

Icelandic Chess Federation (Skáksamband Íslands – SÍ) is the national governing body for chess in Iceland. Based in Reykjavík, the federation represents Iceland within FIDE and the European Chess Union (ECU). It administers national championships, team competition, international representation, youth development, women’s chess, tournament regulations, and cooperation among Icelandic chess clubs.

The federation was founded on June 23, 1925, in the doctor’s residence at Blönduós. Six North Iceland chess clubs established the organization: Skákfélag Blönduóss, Skákfélag Sauðárkróks, Skákfélag Hörgdæla, Skákfélag Akureyrar, Skákfélag Hvammstanga, and Skákfélag Siglufjarðar. Three of those founding clubs — Akureyri, Sauðárkrókur, and Siglufjörður — remain active. In 2025, the federation returned to Blönduós for a major festival celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Jóhanna Björg Jóhannsdóttir currently serves as President of the Icelandic Chess Federation. She was elected in 2025 after several years as Vice President and after extensive work in women’s chess, youth development, chess teaching, arbitration, and tournament organization. Gunnar Björnsson, the federation’s longtime former President, continues as Executive Director and FIDE/ECU delegate and remains closely involved in major tournaments and the federation’s media operations.

🏆 National Championships and Competitive Chess

The Icelandic Chess Federation administers Iceland’s principal national chess championships across several formats and age groups.

The Icelandic Chess Championship (Skákþing Íslands) remains the country’s leading individual classical event. The 2026 championship took place in Garðabær from May 1–9 with ten players in the championship group. IM Hilmir Freyr Heimisson won the Icelandic title for the first time, continuing a championship tradition that has produced many of Iceland’s strongest players.

The federation also organizes the Icelandic Women’s Championship. The 2026 competition combined a championship group with a separate challenger event. Moreover, the national women’s champion received qualification rights for Iceland’s team at the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan, connecting domestic competition directly with international representation.

Additional federation championships include senior events, rapid and blitz titles, challenger competitions, and age-group championships. Therefore, Icelandic players have structured national competition across classical and faster time controls throughout the year.

♜ Icelandic Team Championship

The Íslandsmót skákfélaga, or Icelandic Chess Club Championship, forms the core of national team chess.

The competition currently extends from the Úrvalsdeild, Iceland’s top division, through First, Second, Third, and Fourth Divisions. This structure allows both major clubs and developing teams to compete within one national league system.

The 2025–2026 season produced a historic result, when Taflfélag Vestmannaeyja became Icelandic team champion for the first time. The title was decided after a closely contested final round in March 2026.

The federation manages competition regulations, league organization, results, and the national championship framework. Consequently, the team championship connects clubs from different parts of Iceland and provides an important pathway from local chess into national competition.

🌍 Reykjavík Open and International Tournaments

International tournament organization is one of the federation’s most visible activities. Its flagship event is the Reykjavík Open, which has developed into one of Iceland’s best-known international sporting competitions.

The federation organized the Reykjavík Open 2026 at Harpa Concert Hall from March 25–31. The final field included 245 players representing 39 countries, while Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa won the tournament outright with 7.5 points from nine rounds.

The event combines elite international chess with broad open participation. Grandmasters compete alongside club players, juniors, and visitors from numerous federations. Moreover, the tournament program regularly includes blitz chess, social events, excursions, live broadcasting, and other activities designed for international participants.

Gunnar Björnsson serves as a key tournament organizer and acted as Tournament Director of the 2026 Reykjavík Open.

The federation also develops additional international events. In November 2026, it joins Taflfélag Reykjavíkur in organizing the Friðrik Ólafsson Memorial, honoring Iceland’s first grandmaster and former FIDE President. Jóhanna Björg Jóhannsdóttir serves as Tournament Director for that competition.

🎓 Skákskóli Íslands and Player Development

The Icelandic Chess Federation has a particularly strong connection with Skákskóli Íslands, Iceland’s national chess school. The school operates from the federation facilities at Faxafen 12 in Reykjavík.

Its program includes general training groups, advanced groups, performance training, dedicated girls’ training, and programs for strong young adults. During the 2024–2025 season, participation at the school exceeded 50 students.

The coaching program has included experienced Icelandic players and trainers such as Björn Ívar Karlsson, Jóhanna Björg Jóhannsdóttir, Veronika Steinunn Magnúsdóttir, GM Vignir Vatnar Stefánsson, and IM Hilmir Freyr Heimisson.

The federation also supports talented players who represent Iceland internationally. Its responsibilities include team selection and participation in events such as the Chess Olympiad, European Team Championship, World and European youth championships, and other international competitions.

Therefore, player development extends from introductory youth chess through elite national-team representation.

🧒 Youth and School Chess

School chess represents another important part of the federation’s national program.

In 2026, SÍ renewed the structure of the Landsmót í skólaskák, Iceland’s national school chess championship. Regional qualifying competitions were organized across eight districts, a level of nationwide qualification activity that had not been achieved for approximately 10–15 years.

The national finals in Ólafsvík included separate championships for pupils in grades 1–4, 5–7, and 8–10. In addition, the federation runs national school-team championships for primary and lower-secondary schools.

Youth players also compete in the Icelandic Youth Championship, which awards separate boys’ and girls’ titles across age categories. The 2025 competition attracted 97 participants and produced ten national champions.

These programs connect schools, local chess clubs, Skákskóli Íslands, and federation competition. As a result, young players can progress from school chess into club activity, national championships, and eventually international representation.

♛ Women’s Chess

The federation has increased its focus on opportunities for women and girls. Jóhanna Björg Jóhannsdóttir previously chaired the federation’s Women’s Chess Commission and helped establish dedicated training and tournament programs.

Girls’ events now operate alongside the wider youth championship structure. In addition, dedicated training groups give young female players opportunities to develop together before entering mixed and international competitions.

The federation also maintains a separate Icelandic Women’s Championship and selects a women’s national team for international team events. Therefore, women’s chess now connects grassroots training, national titles, and international representation within the federation’s wider development system.

🏛️ Centennial and Icelandic Chess Heritage

The federation celebrated its 100th anniversary in June 2025 with a return to Blönduós, where the organization had been founded exactly a century earlier.

The centennial program included the Icelandic Open, the federation’s Annual General Meeting, a celebratory dinner, and the Blönduós Blitz. The President of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, attended the official celebration, while FIDE and ECU sent senior representatives.

FIDE also formally recognized the anniversary and described the Icelandic Chess Federation as one of Europe’s oldest chess federations.

The centenary highlighted Iceland’s exceptional relationship with chess. From the federation’s foundation in 1925 through the rise of Grandmaster Friðrik Ólafsson, the 1972 Fischer–Spassky World Championship in Reykjavík, and today’s active national tournament structure, organized chess has maintained an unusually visible place in Icelandic sporting culture.
