Commonwealth Chess Championship 2026 brings a major international chess championship to Kaluthara, Sri Lanka, from May 16 to May 26, 2026. The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organizes the event on behalf of FIDE and the Commonwealth Chess Association.

The championship includes a main Open Championship and a full Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship program. In addition, rapid and blitz events run during the first three days, giving players extra medal opportunities during the same festival window.

The main classical events use a 9-round Swiss system with FIDE standard time control. Moreover, the organizers publish USD 18,000 in total cash prizes, plus separate rapid and blitz prizes in Sri Lankan rupees.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The classical championship follows the FIDE Laws of Chess and uses a 9-round Swiss system. Therefore, players get a full international standard event across the main championship week.

The classical time control is 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment from move 1. In addition, the rapid event uses 15 minutes plus 10 seconds increment, while the blitz event uses 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment.

The Women’s, Senior, and Under-20 Open and Girls championships merge into the Open event for play. However, the event still awards prizes and medals by the published championship categories.

Tie-breaks follow the latest FIDE rules. Cash prizes are not shared, so the final ranking and prize allocation depend on the official tie-break order.

💰 Prize Fund

The organizers publish USD 18,000 in total cash prizes for the championship program. The Open event includes overall prizes and category prizes, while the youth championships include dedicated cash awards in each age group.

🏅 Medals & Titles

Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in the Open, Women, player aged 60+, Under-20 Open, Under-20 Girls, and all youth age groups from Under-8 to Under-18.

The same medal structure also applies to the rapid and blitz events. In addition, gold medal winners receive a trophy.

Foreign participants and accompanying persons pay a USD 110 registration fee. This fee covers airport transfers and organizational costs.

Players from foreign federations must pay all bank commissions. Sri Lankan players must hold Chess Federation of Sri Lanka registration, and their entries remain subject to confirmation.

🛏️ Accommodation

Foreign participants and accompanying persons must stay in official accommodation with star-class facilities and three meals. Sri Lankan players may arrange their own accommodation.

Official entrants receive free boarding and lodging in the official hotel. In addition, Grandmasters rated 2400+ and Women Grandmasters rated 2250+ receive free accommodation at the official hotel in double rooms.

The third bed in most triple rooms is attached to the wall in a corner. Players should consider this detail before choosing a room type.

🚗 How to Get There

Foreign participants should plan travel through Sri Lanka’s main international arrival routes and coordinate airport transfer details during registration. The foreign participant registration fee includes transportation from the airport and back.

Players should share flight details through the registration process. In addition, arrival is scheduled for May 16, 2026, at 14:00, while departure is scheduled for May 26, 2026, at 12:00.

ℹ️ Other

Any player may compete in both the Open and category events by paying the relevant additional entry fee. However, players should confirm eligibility and federation approval before finalizing plans.

Foreign federations should submit separate forms for each player and accompanying person. They should also provide passport details, rooming preference, flight details, and official federation confirmation.

The championship combines classical, rapid, and blitz chess with open, women’s, 50+, Under-20, and youth medal categories. Therefore, players can compete for Commonwealth honors across several formats during one event window.
