53 53 people viewed this event.

The 5ª Copa Francisco Trois FIDE/CBX 2026 will take place from November 19–22, 2026, at Metrópole Xadrez Clube in the historic center of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The fifth edition expands the traditional Francisco Trois tournament into a seven-round classical event with both FIDE Standard and CBX national rating calculation.

Players compete in one open Swiss tournament. With digital clocks, the event uses a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. Moreover, the organizer publishes a total cash prize fund of R$5,000 (approximately $980), led by R$900 for first place.

Metrópole Xadrez Clube limits the field to 64 players. The tournament begins on Thursday evening and then continues with two rounds per day from Friday through Sunday. In addition, the regulations include strict electronic-device rules, a 60-minute default time, zero-point requested byes, and compulsory CBX membership requirements for Standard-rated participation.

♟️ Event Details

The 5ª Copa Francisco Trois FIDE/CBX 2026 continues one of Metrópole Xadrez Clube’s recurring classical competitions while offering both national and international rating opportunities.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

The tournament uses the Swiss System over seven rounds.

When digital clocks are available, each player receives 90 minutes for the game plus a 30-second increment after every move from move one.

However, the regulations also provide an alternative for analog clocks.

Clock Type Time Control
Digital 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move
Analog 120 minutes per player, knockout

Swiss-Manager handles the pairings.

Default Time

The default time is 60 minutes.

Therefore, a player who arrives more than one hour after the scheduled start risks losing the game by default.

Requested Byes

Players may request an absent bye for any round.

However, requested byes receive no points.

Therefore, the tournament does not use half-point byes.

Tiebreaks

If players finish level on points, the organizers use the following order:

  1. Direct encounter
  2. Buchholz with the lowest result excluded
  3. Buchholz without cuts
  4. Sonneborn-Berger
  5. Most games played with Black; a walkover counts as White
  6. Drawing of lots

These ten Overall prizes total R$4,200.

Additional Category Awards

The regulations publish another R$800 in category cash awards, bringing the complete advertised cash fund to R$5,000.

The category-prize area of the current official PDF references Women, PNE / Visual Impairment, and U18, together with R$500 and R$300 cash amounts. However, the table formatting does not unambiguously associate each amount with a specific category.

Therefore, players competing for those category cash awards should confirm the final allocation directly with the organizer.

The organizer awards trophies to:

  • 1st Overall

All eligible players compete in the same seven-round Swiss event.

📍 Venue

The tournament takes place at the permanent headquarters of Metrópole Xadrez Clube:

Metrópole Xadrez Clube – Rua Vigário José Inácio 263, 3rd Floor, Room 31, Centro Histórico, Porto Alegre, RS 90020-100, Brazil

The venue stands in Porto Alegre’s Centro Histórico, close to the Mercado Público, commercial streets, restaurants, public transport, and several hotels.

Because the club uses an upper-floor room, players with specific mobility requirements should contact the organizer in advance to confirm the most suitable access arrangements.

Playing Equipment

Every player must bring:

  • a chess clock;
  • a pen.

Therefore, participants should not assume that the organizer will provide a clock for every board.

🏨 Accommodation

The organizer does not publish an official tournament hotel.

However, several practical hotels operate in Porto Alegre’s Centro Histórico.

Hotel Address Indicative Recent Price
Hotel Continental Business Praça Otávio Rocha 49, Centro Histórico About $30
Hotel Express Centro Histórico Rua Sete de Setembro 661, Centro Histórico About $50
Hotel Praça da Matriz Largo João Amorim de Albuquerque 72, Centro Histórico About $60

Hotel Continental Business offers a particularly central location near the commercial core.

Meanwhile, Hotel Express Centro Histórico sits close to Rua da Praia, museums, and Mercado Público. Hotel Praça da Matriz offers another central option near the historic civic district.

These prices are recent indicative public rates rather than guaranteed November 19–22 tournament prices.

Therefore, players should compare the exact tournament-weekend rate, breakfast policy, parking, and cancellation conditions before booking.

🚆 How to Get There

The tournament venue lies in the Centro Histórico, one of Porto Alegre’s best-connected districts.

By Metro / Trensurb

Mercado Station is the most useful Trensurb station for the historic center.

The Trensurb system connects Mercado with Porto Alegre’s northern districts, the airport area, Canoas, São Leopoldo, and Novo Hamburgo.

Therefore, players staying elsewhere along the Trensurb corridor can reach the center without driving.

From Salgado Filho International Airport

Salgado Filho International Airport (POA) is Porto Alegre’s main airport.

The city’s public-transport network links the airport area with the Trensurb system and central Porto Alegre. The Aeroporto–Mercado corridor provides access toward the Centro Histórico.

However, service arrangements around the airport connection have changed during infrastructure recovery in recent years. Therefore, arriving players should verify the live Trensurb and airport connection on the day of travel.

Taxi and rideshare services provide a simpler direct alternative from the terminal to Rua Vigário José Inácio.

From Porto Alegre Bus Station

Porto Alegre’s main interstate bus terminal stands close to Rodoviária Trensurb Station.

From there, players can continue one stop toward Mercado or use local transport toward the tournament venue.

By Car

Use:

Rua Vigário José Inácio 263, Centro Histórico, Porto Alegre, RS 90020-100

The club does not publish dedicated private tournament parking in the 2026 regulations.

Therefore, drivers should use legal public or commercial parking in the Centro Histórico and verify closing times if they expect games to run into the evening.

2025 Edition

The 4ª Copa Francisco Trois 2025 took place from December 5–7, 2025.

That edition attracted 48 players and used a five-round format.

FM Felipe Kubiaki Menna Barreto won the tournament with 4.5/5, while Rodrigo da Silva Borges, Anderson Donay Martins, and Igor Ferreira da Silva each finished on 4/5.

The 2026 edition therefore expands the competition from five to seven rounds and raises the published prize fund from R$1,450 in 2025 to R$5,000 in 2026.

Metrópole Xadrez Clube

Metrópole Xadrez Clube was founded in 1937 and remains one of Porto Alegre’s long-established chess institutions.

The club runs classical, rapid, blitz, school, and open competitions throughout the year. Moreover, it maintains its permanent headquarters in the Centro Histórico.

Important
