Cavalier Noir Les Herbiers Échecs is an active chess club based in Les Herbiers, Vendée, France. The club affiliates with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) under code C85015. It combines competitive chess, structured training, youth development, women’s chess, school outreach, and tournament organization.

The club opened its doors in July 2013 with around ten licensed players. Since then, it has expanded considerably. One of its principal events is the Open FIDE des Herbiers. The tournament reached its 8th edition in January 2026. That edition offered three rating sections and five FIDE-rated classical rounds at 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. In addition, International Arbiter Luc Fancelli served as chief arbiter.

The tournament has grown substantially since its early editions. For example, the fifth Open FIDE attracted 106 players, establishing a participation record at that time. The City of Les Herbiers highlighted both the increase in participation and the presence of strong young competitors from outside the department.

Another important series is the Rapide du Bocage. The club schedules the 4th Rapide du Bocage for October 4, 2026, at LUDyLAB in Chanverrie. The FFE-rated and FIDE-rated event uses seven Swiss rounds at 15 minutes plus five seconds per move. Moreover, the organizer allows a field of up to 160 players.

Cavalier Noir Les Herbiers Échecs participates actively in French team competition. The current FFE club record places its main adult team in Nationale 4. Therefore, club members can represent Les Herbiers beyond local and departmental tournaments.

In February 2025, Cavalier Noir organized the Trophée Caïssa for the first time. The rapid tournament focused specifically on female participation and expanded the club’s tournament calendar beyond its established mixed events.

Furthermore, the women’s program links tournament activity with team competition. The promotion to Nationale 1 Féminine gives the club’s strongest female players access to high-level national team chess.

This development complements the club’s broader objective of providing competitive opportunities across different ages and categories. As a result, women’s chess has become an established part of Cavalier Noir’s sporting structure rather than a stand-alone initiative.

🎓 Chess Training and Youth Development

Cavalier Noir Les Herbiers Échecs provides courses for different playing levels. Players can learn the fundamentals, improve existing skills, or prepare more seriously for competition. The club currently schedules chess activity on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

In addition, the club has brought stronger coaches into its training program. Its official program includes sessions with International Master Vincent Colin, giving ambitious members access to advanced instruction.

Youth development also extends into organized championships. The club participates in junior team competition and hosts youth events. Therefore, children can progress from introductory lessons to rated individual and team chess.

The club’s growth has strengthened this development structure. What began with a small group in 2013 has become a club capable of offering several weekly sessions and multiple competitive pathways.

🏫 School Chess and Community Activity

Cavalier Noir also brings chess into schools around Les Herbiers. The club has organized school introductions for several years and supports pupils who progress into official scholastic competition.

A notable example came through École Jacques Prévert. Club volunteers supported and coached the school team through departmental and regional stages before it qualified for the French national schools final in Grenoble. The team eventually finished 17th among 26 schools, recording four victories.

The club has also helped organize the Vendée departmental primary-school championship. In addition, its members take chess into public settings through open days, demonstrations, local events, and partnerships with venues such as LUDyLAB.
