♟️ About Les Cavaliers de Nerra

Les Cavaliers de Nerra is a French chess club based in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Founded in the summer of 2022 by François Drochon and Pascal Hegedus, two players previously associated with Échiquier Descartois, the club was created to establish a permanent chess structure in Loches with a particular emphasis on youth development. It is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs under club code G37053 and operates from the Maison des Associations on Avenue Aristide Briand.

The club welcomes beginners, developing players, experienced competitors, children, teenagers, and adults. Its coaching staff includes instructors qualified through the French Chess Federation, while members can progress from introductory lessons and recreational play into licensed competition. The club currently participates in both adult and youth regional Interclubs, and its first team earned promotion to Régionale 1 for the 2026–2027 season after winning its Régionale 2 group.

Tournament organization has quickly become another important part of the club’s identity. Les Cavaliers de Nerra organizes the annual Open de Loches, a FIDE-rated classical tournament that also serves as the Indre-et-Loire departmental championship. The club additionally develops youth competition, internal rated games, regional team activity, and chess training. Although it is a relatively young organization, its rapid growth has established it as an increasingly active part of the chess community in Loches and Indre-et-Loire.

📜 History and Local Identity

Les Cavaliers de Nerra was founded in summer 2022 through the initiative of François Drochon and Pascal Hegedus.

Both founders came from Échiquier Descartois and brought experience in competitive chess, player instruction, and club organization to the new Loches project.

The club’s name deliberately connects chess with the medieval heritage of Loches. “Cavaliers” refers both to the knight chess piece and to medieval horsemen, while Nerra refers to Foulques Nerra, the powerful Count of Anjou associated with the construction of the historic keep at Loches.

The club’s visual identity continues this theme by drawing inspiration from the imagery of the Bayeux Tapestry and the medieval history of the region.

From its earliest seasons, however, the organization’s practical priority has remained player development, especially among younger members.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Youth training forms one of the foundations of Les Cavaliers de Nerra.

Regular Wednesday afternoon sessions at the Maison des Associations are divided by playing level. Beginners receive instruction from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, while intermediate young players train from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Teenagers and adults can then take part in lessons and free play from approximately 5:10 PM to 6:45 PM.

This structure gives young players a clear progression route. They can begin with fundamental chess instruction, move into guided games, acquire an FFE license, and eventually participate in rated individual and team competition.

The club also takes part in regional youth Interclubs, giving its younger members experience representing Loches against other clubs.

♜ Team Chess

Les Cavaliers de Nerra has made rapid progress in French team competition since its creation.

The first team initially worked through departmental and regional levels before establishing itself in Régionale 2.

During the 2025–2026 season, the leading team of captain Guillaume Giraud, together with Orso Castro, Christopher Dowson, Lucien Aubert, and other club players, finished first in its Régionale 2 group.

That result earned promotion to Régionale 1 for the 2026–2027 season.

The club is also developing greater depth. Its 2026–2027 program includes a second departmental team and a third developing team linked with the Formule 37 structure.

This expansion is important because higher national levels require larger squads. Therefore, the club is actively developing additional players who can eventually support its competitive ambitions.

🏆 Open de Loches

The Open de Loches is the principal tournament organized by Les Cavaliers de Nerra.

The first edition took place in October 2023 and attracted players from numerous clubs and several French regional leagues. FIDE Master Jérémie Devallée won the inaugural Open, while Jacques Masset became the 2023 Indre-et-Loire departmental champion.

The second edition followed in 2024, attracting 60 players. Giuliano Ippoliti won the tournament and simultaneously became departmental champion.

The Open continued to grow in 2025, when participation reached 86 players. The event again combined the general Open with the official Indre-et-Loire classical championship.

The competition has therefore grown significantly within only a few editions and now represents one of the club’s most important annual projects.

🏆 4e Open d’Échecs de Loches 2026

The 4e Open d’Échecs de Loches takes place on October 24–25, 2026 at the Maison des Associations in Loches.

The tournament again serves as the official support event for the 2026 Indre-et-Loire Departmental Championship and is organized in cooperation with the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs d’Indre-et-Loire.

The competition is FIDE-rated and limited to players below 2400 Elo.

It consists of five classical rounds played over two days at a time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

The event is limited to 100 participants to maintain comfortable playing conditions. The Maison des Associations provides a spacious tournament hall, a separate analysis area, refreshments, and wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Pascal Hegedus serves as organizer, while Jean-Claude Templeur, an FFE Elite 1 Arbiter, serves as Chief Arbiter.

♟️ Formule 37

In 2026, Les Cavaliers de Nerra expanded its development program with the Formule 37.

The project provides officially rated slow-play games within the club environment, using a time control of 50 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move.

It is particularly useful for young and developing players who need experience in longer competitive games before moving into more demanding team and Open events.

Early sessions in 2026 brought together a group of young players at the Maison des Associations.

The project also supports the club’s plan to develop an additional team for the 2026–2027 season, giving newer members a structured bridge between lessons and formal Interclubs competition.

🤝 Departmental Chess

Les Cavaliers de Nerra has quickly developed a close relationship with the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs d’Indre-et-Loire (CDJE37).

The committee delegates organization of the departmental classical championship to the club through the Open de Loches.

The organization has also participated in the Indre-et-Loire Youth Championships. In recent seasons, Loches has hosted part of the departmental junior qualification program in cooperation with Club d’Échecs d’Avoine and the departmental committee.

These partnerships give local players access to official championship pathways without having to travel outside the department for every stage of competition.

🏠 Maison des Associations

The club’s permanent base is the Maison des Associations, 1 Avenue Aristide Briand, 37600 Loches.

The Fédération Française des Échecs lists the same location as both the club’s registered headquarters and playing venue.

Regular sessions take place in a ground-floor room, and the premises are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

For larger events such as the Open de Loches, the venue provides capacity for a substantially larger field together with analysis space and refreshments.

Its central location gives Les Cavaliers de Nerra a stable home for weekly lessons, team matches, internal competition, and major tournament organization.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Pascal Hegedus is the current President and official Contact Person of Les Cavaliers de Nerra.

He co-founded the club with François Drochon in 2022 and has remained closely involved with its sporting and administrative development.

Hegedus is also registered with the Fédération Française des Échecs as an Arbitre Club, with a current arbiter license extending through the 2028–2029 season.

He serves as organizer of the Open de Loches and represents the club in its cooperation with the Indre-et-Loire departmental chess committee.

François Drochon remains an important figure in the club’s foundation and development. His earlier experience in youth instruction and chess organization helped establish the training-oriented model that Les Cavaliers de Nerra continues to follow.
