For 2026, AidaChess is the congress’s official tournament registration and management platform. AidaChess will handle registration, pairings, and standings, replacing Swiss-Manager and Chess-Results for this edition. The congress also forms part of the ECF International Series.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
All sections use a time control of 110 minutes per player plus a 10-second increment after every move.
Players must record all moves on the supplied scoresheets until their clock falls below five minutes. Once a player’s remaining time falls below five minutes, continuing notation becomes optional.
All sections use Swiss-system pairings. AidaChess will handle tournament registration, pairings, and standings for the 2026 congress, replacing Swiss-Manager, which the congress used in previous editions.
The July 2026 published rating lists determine which section a player may enter. However, the tournament will use the published October 2026 ratings for pairings.
For the Open and Challengers sections, the higher of a player’s ECF and FIDE rating applies when determining section eligibility. Non-ENG players entering the Open or Challengers must also have a FIDE identification number.
If a player’s October rating makes them ineligible for their originally selected section, the organizer may move them to a higher section without charging an additional entry fee. If the October rating makes a player eligible for a lower section, the player must request the transfer.
Players arriving more than 30 minutes after the scheduled start of a round may lose the game by default.

Additional rating prizes may be awarded depending on the number of entries.
Players may win only one individual prize. If a player qualifies for both a main prize and a rating prize, the higher-value prize applies.
When players finish tied, the relevant prize money will be shared equally.

The Open is the top section of the congress. All Open games will use smart boards and will be broadcast live over the internet.
The Challengers U2050 section also carries both ECF and FIDE rating status.
The Major, Intermediate, Minor, and Foundation sections provide separate ECF-rated competitions based on rating level.
The July 2026 ratings determine initial section eligibility, while October ratings will be used for pairings during the congress.

Most sections will play in the Ocean Room. The Open section, and possibly the Challengers section, will play in the Sun Court.
The Scarborough Spa Complex overlooks South Bay and provides a large seaside setting for the congress. The venue also offers food and beverage facilities, including bar service.
Players may not eat while playing.

Scarborough Spa Complex is located on South Bay, close to Scarborough town centre and the seafront.
Players travelling by public transport can reach Scarborough by rail and continue to the Spa Complex using local transport, taxi, or on foot depending on their accommodation.

🏆 Club Championship
The Club Championship continues in 2026 following its successful introduction at the previous congress.
The winning club will receive £500 (approximately $680) together with a commemorative plaque.
A club must have at least six players participating in the congress. Clubs must be affiliated with a chess federation and have their own bank account.
Up to two clubs may combine for the competition, in which case they share any prize won.
Club Championship scoring awards:

- 0 points for a loss or bye
The best-performing players contribute to their club’s final score.

Scarborough Chess Congress is a long-running annual weekend chess congress held in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. Established in 1977, it has developed into one of the largest established congresses in the English tournament calendar. The event is organized independently rather than as a chess club and has been based at the Scarborough Spa Complex on South Bay since 1999.
The congress provides competitive classical chess across several rating sections, allowing titled players, experienced club competitors, juniors, and developing players to compete within suitable groups. All sections are ECF rated, while the leading sections also receive FIDE rating. The 2025 edition attracted a record 445 entries, and a new Club Championship was successfully introduced alongside the individual competitions.
Nigel Hepworth is the current Director and Organiser and the principal contact for the congress. He took over responsibility for the event following Andrew Butterworth’s retirement in 2021. 📜 History and Development
The first Scarborough Chess Congress was held from October 21–23, 1977 at The Corner in Scarborough’s North Bay. Organized by Duncan McGregor, the inaugural event offered three main tournaments plus a junior competition and attracted 222 entries.
McGregor ran the congress until 1990, when Keith and Eileen Jones assumed responsibility. In 2007, Lara Barnes and Andrew Butterworth, together with Chess Direct Ltd, took over its organization. After Butterworth retired in 2021, Nigel Hepworth assumed responsibility for running the congress.
The event was occasionally staged at Scarborough Spa during its early decades when entry numbers exceeded the capacity of The Corner. After The Corner closed in 1999, the congress moved permanently to the Spa Complex, usually using the Ocean Room while also making use of larger Spa spaces when required.
