Scarborough Chess Congress is a long-running annual weekend chess congress held in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. Established in 1977, it has developed into one of the largest established congresses in the English tournament calendar. The event is organized independently rather than as a chess club and has been based at the Scarborough Spa Complex on South Bay since 1999. The congress provides competitive classical chess across several rating sections, allowing titled players, experienced club competitors, juniors, and developing players to compete within suitable groups. All sections are ECF rated, while the leading sections also receive FIDE rating. The 2025 edition attracted a record 445 entries, and a new Club Championship was successfully introduced alongside the individual competitions. Nigel Hepworth is the current Director and Organiser and the principal contact for the congress. He took over responsibility for the event following Andrew Butterworth’s retirement in 2021. The next edition is the 49th Scarborough Chess Congress, scheduled for October 23–25, 2026, with six sections, more than £7,000 in prize money, and membership of the new ECF International Series.

📜 History and Development

The first Scarborough Chess Congress was held from October 21–23, 1977 at The Corner in Scarborough’s North Bay. Organized by Duncan McGregor, the inaugural event offered three main tournaments plus a junior competition and attracted 222 entries. McGregor ran the congress until 1990, when Keith and Eileen Jones assumed responsibility. In 2007, Lara Barnes and Andrew Butterworth, together with Chess Direct Ltd, took over its organization. After Butterworth retired in 2021, Nigel Hepworth assumed responsibility for running the congress. The event was occasionally staged at Scarborough Spa during its early decades when entry numbers exceeded the capacity of The Corner. After The Corner closed in 1999, the congress moved permanently to the Spa Complex, usually using the Ocean Room while also making use of larger Spa spaces when required.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Scarborough Chess Congress follows a five-round Swiss-system weekend format. The 2026 edition retains the six-section structure introduced for the previous congress:

• Major – U1900
• Intermediate – U1750
• Minor – U1600
• Foundation – U1450

All six sections are ECF rated, while the Open and Challengers are also FIDE rated. The time control is 110 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. The congress has traditionally attracted a large national field. The 48th edition in 2025 reached a record 445 entries, despite competition for stronger players from another major international tournament taking place at the same time. The organizers are preparing for attendance approaching 500 players in 2026, with the Spa accommodation booked for slightly more than that capacity.

🌍 49th Scarborough Chess Congress 2026

The 49th Scarborough Chess Congress takes place from October 23–25, 2026 at the Scarborough Spa Complex, South Bay. It forms part of the ECF International Series, placing it within the English Chess Federation’s program of significant international-standard competitions. More than £7,000 in prize money is available. The Open offers £1,000 for first place, while the Challengers, Major, Intermediate, and Minor sections each offer £600 first prizes. The Foundation first prize is £400, and additional rating prizes are available. Lara Barnes serves as Chief Arbiter for the 2026 congress, supported by Matthew Carr, Nigel Hepworth, Peter Ackley, Jim Burnett, and Neil Lowther.

♜ Club Championship

A Club Championship was introduced at Scarborough in 2025 and continues as a feature of the 2026 congress. Clubs require at least six participating players, and the combined results of their six highest-scoring competitors determine the team score. The winning ECF-registered club receives £500. The Chess Centre of Ilkley enters the 2026 congress as the defending champion after winning the inaugural competition in 2025.

His current role is confirmed by both the congress’s official 2026 documentation and the English Chess Federation, which lists him as organizer of the 49th edition. Its focus is the preparation and delivery of the annual Scarborough event, including entries, pairings, arbitration, rating submissions, sponsorship, and tournament administration.
