♟️ About the Organizer

Schachfreunde Wilstermarsch & Itzehoe von 2014 e.V. is an active chess club serving Itzehoe, the Wilstermarsch, and nearby communities in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The organization was founded in 2014 and has since developed into one of the region’s largest and most active chess communities.

Unlike a club connected with only one town, the organization represents players from a wider regional area. Its activities take place in Itzehoe, Brunsbüttel, and surrounding communities. Therefore, members can join training and competitions at several locations.

The club welcomes children, adults, beginners, recreational players, and experienced competitors. It combines structured chess training with team matches, rated tournaments, school projects, club evenings, and social activities.

Björn Behrend serves as the club’s Chairman. He coordinates the organization together with Vice-Chairman Hannes Trapp and a wider committee. Meanwhile, Anke Behrend serves as Youth Officer and Treasurer and plays a leading role in the club’s tournaments and junior program.

The organization has more than 100 registered members. Moreover, a large proportion of its membership consists of children, young players, and female participants. This broad membership reflects the club’s strong emphasis on inclusion and youth development.

🏆 Tournaments and Team Chess

The club organizes a substantial program of classical, rapid, and junior tournaments. Its best-known competition is the annual Itzehoer Schach Open, which attracts players from Germany and other national federations.

The open uses a seven-round Swiss system and counts toward both FIDE Elo and German DWZ ratings. More than 120 players participated in the fifth edition in May 2026. As a result, the event has become one of the club’s largest annual competitions.

The organizers provide a full multi-day schedule, live-board coverage, rating-category prizes, and awards for women, juniors, and senior players. Anke and Björn Behrend manage the tournament together with qualified arbiters.

The recurring DWZ/ELO Cup series offers another important competitive opportunity. Each cup places participants into small groups according to playing strength. Players then complete several long games during a single day. Therefore, developing competitors can face opponents with similar ratings while gaining valuable tournament experience.

By June 2026, the series had reached its 44th edition. Additional cups remain part of the club’s annual calendar, which gives local and visiting players regular access to rated classical chess.

The organization also enters adult, junior, and women’s teams in competitions managed by the Schleswig-Holstein Chess Federation. Its teams compete in regional adult leagues, the Youth Landesliga, district youth divisions, and the Women’s Landesliga.

Consequently, members can progress from introductory club activities to formal team competition. Stronger juniors can also gain experience alongside established adult players.

🌱 Junior and School Chess

Youth development stands at the center of the club’s work. The organization provides weekly sessions for juniors and adults in Itzehoe and Brunsbüttel. It also offers online training for advanced players and a separate training group for girls.

The club works with numerous primary and secondary schools in Itzehoe, Heiligenstedten, and Hohenaspe. These school chess groups introduce pupils to the rules, basic tactics, concentration, and fair play. In addition, the club contributes to an enrichment program for talented pupils in the Steinburg district.

The Pingi Cup is the organization’s dedicated school chess series. The club named the competition after its penguin mascot. Players compete in school-year groups, and every participant receives recognition for taking part.

The scoring system also rewards effort. Children receive points for wins and draws, while a player who loses still receives a courage point. As a result, beginners can enjoy their first tournament without feeling that only the final ranking matters.

The club also organizes the Pingi Chess Arena, which creates a bridge between school chess and traditional club tournaments. These events use more formal tournament conditions and help children prepare for longer games.

Meanwhile, the recurring Youth Grand Prix brings together junior players in several age categories. The 12th edition attracted 77 participants in February 2026. Events such as this provide valuable competition while maintaining a supportive environment.

Through school cooperation, girls’ chess, regular training, youth leagues, and rated tournaments, Schachfreunde Wilstermarsch & Itzehoe has created a clear development pathway. Beginners can discover chess locally, while ambitious players can progress into stronger regional and national competitions.
