♟️ About Mind Sports Olympiad
Mind Sports Olympiad (MSO) is an international festival and tournament organization based in London, England. It brings together players from different countries to compete in chess, board games, card games, abstract strategy games, puzzles, memory disciplines, and other tests of mental skill.
The first Mind Sports Olympiad took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London in 1997. Since then, the organization has developed an annual program that combines serious competition with opportunities to learn new games, meet international players, and take part in a broad community of mind-sports enthusiasts.
MSO operates through M S O Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. Its mission emphasizes intellectual development, friendship across borders, cultural exchange, mental fitness, strategic thinking, and mutual understanding through games. The event welcomes experienced champions, recreational competitors, junior players, families, and newcomers.
🏆 Competitions and International Events
The main Mind Sports Olympiad includes more than 100 competitions across a wide range of disciplines. Its program features established games such as chess, Go, Scrabble, backgammon, bridge, and poker alongside modern board games, mental calculation, memory competitions, creative thinking, and other specialist events.
Each competition awards medals, while several disciplines also carry world-championship status. The organization’s most prestigious combined award is the Pentamind World Championship. Pentamind rankings reward competitors who achieve the strongest combined results across five different eligible events, encouraging participants to demonstrate skill in several types of games.
Mind Sports Olympiad also runs an online Grand Prix program. This competition series allows players from around the world to participate remotely in multiple games before the main in-person festival takes place in London.
In addition, the organization supports specialist events and international partnerships connected with diving chess, abstract strategy games, mental calculation, and other mind-sport disciplines.
♟️ Chess at Mind Sports Olympiad
Chess has been one of the central disciplines within the Mind Sports Olympiad since the event’s early years. The program has included classical chess, rapid chess, blitz, Chess960, diving chess, and online chess competitions.
For the 30th Mind Sports Olympiad in 2026, MSO works with Elite Chess Events to deliver a major FIDE- and ECF-rated rapid and blitz program. The competitions take place on August 22 and 23 at the Mercure London Suite Conference Centre.
The rapid tournament includes Open, Under 1900, and Under 1600 sections. Two separate open blitz tournaments also form part of the weekend schedule. Together, the competitions offer several rating categories, substantial cash prizes, women’s awards, and free or reduced entry for eligible titled players.
Lance Leslie-Smith serves as tournament director for the chess competitions. Through this partnership, Mind Sports Olympiad combines its established international festival structure with experienced professional chess-event management.
🌍 Community and Player Experience
Mind Sports Olympiad is designed for players who enjoy more than one form of intellectual competition. Participants can concentrate on a specialist discipline or enter several different tournaments during the festival.
The event also provides opportunities to discover unfamiliar games through demonstrations, introductory sessions, streaming coverage, and direct interaction with experienced players. Its active online community allows participants to discuss games, receive event assistance, and remain connected throughout the year.
After holding online editions during the pandemic, MSO returned to in-person competition while retaining its international online Grand Prix. As a result, the organization now provides both physical and remote opportunities for players around the world.
Through its annual London festival, online competitions, world championships, chess events, and international partnerships, Mind Sports Olympiad continues to promote competitive mind sports within a diverse global community.
