The 1st International Altenburg Chess Days 2026 took place from April 3–6, 2026 at the Goldener Pflug sports hall in Altenburg, Thuringia, Germany. Meuselwitzer Schachverein 1921 e.V. and Schachclub Altenburg e.V. jointly organized the inaugural edition.

The four-day classical Open attracted 66 players from three federations. Players competed over seven Swiss-system rounds, with games rated for both FIDE Elo and German DWZ. The East Thuringian Individual Championships 2026 were also integrated into the Open.

Edwin Fischer won the tournament. IM Ferenc Langheinrich finished second, while Norman Schütze took third place. Gabriela Ignatova received the award for the best female player, and Johannes Sondermann became the 2026 East Thuringian Champion.

The Open also incorporated the East Thuringian Individual Championships 2026. Players with active playing eligibility in Schachbezirk Ost competed for the titles of East Thuringian Individual Champion and East Thuringian Women’s Individual Champion.

A separate U14 Youth Open took place in the same building on April 4–5, 2026. It was an independent tournament and is not part of the Open results.

The tournament used a 7-round Swiss System.

Players arriving more than 30 minutes after the scheduled start of a round lost the game by forfeit.

Altenburg-Nobitz Airport (AOC) is geographically closer, but it is not a practical airport for regular international passenger travel.
