Wellness Chess Tour is a Hungary-based international chess tournament series led by József Jeszenszky. Operating since 2012, the organization specializes in combining serious FIDE-rated chess with hotel and wellness stays. Rather than functioning as a conventional chess club, Wellness Chess Tour creates recurring tournament destinations where the playing hall, accommodation, meals, and wellness facilities are often available within the same hotel complex. The tournament program centers on classical FIDE-rated opens, frequently accompanied by blitz competitions and Grand Prix standings. Events are staged throughout Hungary in destinations such as Harkány, Hévíz, Szentgotthárd, Győr, Esztergom, Pécs, Siófok, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, and Budapest. Moreover, the series has expanded internationally with events in Lendava, Slovenia, and Selce-Crikvenica, Croatia. Most Grand Prix tournaments use seven-round Swiss systems and welcome players across a broad rating range, including titled players, club competitors, juniors, seniors, and amateur players. József Jeszenszky is the principal Tournament Organizer and Tournament Director and handles entries, hotel arrangements, and player communication. FIDE records also identify him as Chief Organizer of Wellness Chess Tour events. The organization remains highly active in 2026. After completing the Wellness Chess Tour Croatia in Selce from August 26–30, its next event is the 20th Premium International Chess Tournament Budapest from September 4–6, 2026. The autumn program then continues through Székesfehérvár, Siófok, Szeged, Pécs, and December Grand Prix events.

📜 Tournament Concept and Development

Wellness Chess Tour has organized chess events since 2012 with a distinctive “stay and play” concept. The organization chooses hotels and resort destinations that allow competitors to combine tournament chess with comfortable accommodation and leisure facilities. Depending on the venue, packages can include half board, swimming pools, thermal baths, saunas, fitness facilities, and discounted spa admission. Because the tournament hall is frequently located inside the same hotel, players can move easily between their games, accommodation, meals, and wellness facilities. This model has allowed the organization to build a recognizable calendar of recurring destinations. It also makes the tournaments attractive to accompanying partners and family members who may not participate in the chess competition itself.

🏆 Wellness Chess Tour Grand Prix

The Wellness Chess Tour Grand Prix is the organization’s principal competitive series. Players collect GP points according to their results at individual tournament stops, creating an additional season-long competition alongside each standalone event. The official 2026 regulations reward regular participation. Players who complete enough stations become eligible for the final Grand Prix standings, while frequent participants receive entry-fee discounts and additional wellness-related rewards. Selected loyalty prizes include hotel stays and other partner benefits. Most GP events consist of seven Swiss-system rounds. A common classical time control is 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. In addition, many tournament weekends include a separate FIDE-rated blitz competition. The series also offers category prizes for groups such as juniors, women, seniors, and different rating bands, helping create meaningful competition for players outside the overall podium places.

🌍 International Tournament Activity

Although Hungary remains the center of the series, Wellness Chess Tour has increasingly developed an international calendar. From July 1–5, 2026, the tour staged a Grand Prix event at Hotel Thermal Resort Lendava in Slovenia. The tournament used a seven-round FIDE-rated Swiss format and combined classical chess with the resort’s thermal and wellness facilities. The international program continued with the Wellness Chess Tour Croatia in Selce-Crikvenica from August 26–30, 2026. Held at Hotel Marina, the event featured seven classical rounds and a prize fund of €1,500, together with hotel accommodation, half board, and wellness facilities. József Jeszenszky was the official organizer, while IO Péter Szamosközi served as Tournament Director and IA István Brindza as Chief Arbiter. This event further established the series beyond its traditional Hungarian tournament base.

🌟 Autumn and Winter 2026

The next competition is the 20th Premium International Chess Tournament Budapest, scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 at Agora Tower in Budapest. The event offers six rounds of internationally rated classical chess. The Grand Prix calendar then continues with GP13 in Székesfehérvár from September 24–27, followed by GP14 in Siófok from October 14–17 and GP15 at Art Hotel Szeged from October 22–25. Further tournament activity is planned in Pécs before the final December events. The late-season calendar includes another wellness tournament in Harkány from December 10–13 and the GP18 Esztergom tournament from December 17–20, 2026 at Hotel Bellevue. Consequently, Wellness Chess Tour provides players with repeated FIDE-rated competition throughout the year while maintaining the same combination of chess, travel, hotel accommodation, and wellness experiences.

🎓 Chess Training

Tournament organization is not Jeszenszky’s only chess activity. He has also provided chess instruction for children and adults since 2010. His coaching focuses on the main phases of a chess game — opening, middlegame, and endgame — together with concentration, decision-making, creativity, and practical competitive skills. This training activity complements the Wellness Chess Tour program by connecting chess education with frequent opportunities for students and other developing players to gain tournament experience.
