♟️ About SWISS CHESS TOUR

SWISS CHESS TOUR is a Swiss chess tournament organization led by Claudio Boschetti and based in Melano Val Mara, Ticino, Switzerland. Rather than operating as a conventional chess club, it specializes in organizing over-the-board tournaments at locations throughout Switzerland. Its calendar combines city opens, Alpine tournaments, lakeside events, senior competitions, amateur tournaments, rapid and blitz events, and larger chess festivals. Most classical competitions offer FIDE international rating, often together with Swiss national and German DWZ rating. The organization runs more than 30 tournaments per year, with many events using compact weekend schedules. SWISS CHESS TOUR has developed recurring tournament destinations in Basel, Lugano-Paradiso, Mendrisio/Capolago, Lenzerheide, Flims, San Bernardino, Schaffhausen, Pfäffikon, Davos, Locarno, Wil, and other Swiss locations. Hotel venues are an important part of its concept. Therefore, players can often combine tournament participation with accommodation at or near the playing hall. Claudio Boschetti is the founder and principal organizer behind SWISS CHESS TOUR and handles tournament planning, venue selection, entries, marketing, and player communication. His organization has also taken responsibility for major competitions of the Swiss Chess Federation, including the Swiss Bundesturnier in 2025 and 2026. Following a busy summer calendar, the next SWISS CHESS TOUR event is the Mendrisio Lake Summer Open & Blitz from September 4–6, 2026. Further tournaments are already scheduled throughout autumn and winter 2026.

📜 Development of the Tournament Series

SWISS CHESS TOUR has built its identity around frequent tournament opportunities rather than one annual flagship event. Boschetti has explained that he searches for suitable destinations and then uses his professional experience in project management and marketing to develop new chess events. A major priority is the playing environment. The organization regularly selects hotels and attractive tourist destinations where players have sufficient space at the board and accompanying family members can enjoy the location. This model has produced a diverse calendar covering urban, Alpine, lakeside, and resort destinations. The Basel Xmas Festival, for example, has been organized at the Mövenpick Hotel Basel since 2022 and has developed into one of the larger recurring events in the SWISS CHESS TOUR program.

🏆 Swiss Bundesturnier

An important milestone came when SWISS CHESS TOUR assumed responsibility for the traditional Swiss Bundesturnier, one of the major competitions on the Swiss Chess Federation calendar. The organization staged its first Bundesturnier in 2025 in Pfäffikon SZ. It then organized the tournament again from May 14–17, 2026 in Basel, bringing the event back to the city for the first time in 24 years. The Basel edition attracted 384 players across five traditional sections: Hauptturnier I, Hauptturnier II, Hauptturnier III, Seniorenturnier I, and Seniorenturnier II. GM Li Min Peng won Hauptturnier I and successfully defended his title as Bundesmeister. Claudio Boschetti served as the principal organizer, while Dr. Urs Fazis was Tournament Director and IA Tiziana Balzarini Chief Arbiter. The successful event further strengthened SWISS CHESS TOUR’s role within Switzerland’s national tournament infrastructure.

🏔️ Alpine, City and Lakeside Chess

A distinctive feature of SWISS CHESS TOUR is its use of different Swiss destinations rather than a single permanent venue. The Lenzerheide Amateur – Swiss Alpine Open brings weekend chess to the Graubünden mountains, while Flims and Davos provide additional Alpine tournament destinations. San Bernardino has hosted both general and senior events. In Ticino, the calendar includes competitions around Lugano-Paradiso, Mendrisio/Capolago, Locarno, and Serpiano. Meanwhile, events in Basel, Schaffhausen, Wohlen, Wil, and Pfäffikon extend the program across other parts of Switzerland. Many competitions use a familiar classical format of five rounds with 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Longer festivals may use six or seven rounds, while additional rapid and blitz tournaments often complement the main event.

🌟 2026 Tournament Program

SWISS CHESS TOUR maintains an especially extensive schedule in 2026. Earlier events included the Basel Spring Open, Lugano-Paradiso Easter Festival, Locarno Weekend Open, Serpiano Open, Swiss Bundesturnier, San Bernardino events, ZürichSee Festival, Wil 2Days Open, and Wohlen Amateur Swiss City Open. The next tournament is the Mendrisio Lake Summer Open & Blitz, scheduled for September 4–6, 2026 in Capolago. It combines a five-round FIDE-rated classical tournament with a seven-round FIDE Blitz competition. Further confirmed events include the Lugano-Paradiso One Day Open on September 19, the ZÜRICHSee October Festival from October 2–4, Lenzerheide Amateur from October 16–18, and FLIMS Exclusive Swiss Alpine Open from October 23–25. The winter calendar continues with the Davos Ski Alpine Chess Open from November 27–29, Schaffhausen 2Days Open on December 5–6, and the Basel Xmas Festival from December 26–30, 2026. SWISS CHESS TOUR also organizes selected events outside Switzerland, including the München Chess Happening in December 2026.
