Schachverein 1926 Riegelsberg is a chess club based in Riegelsberg, Saarland, Germany. Its roots go back to July 1926, when Schachclub 1926 Güchenbach was founded in what is now a district of Riegelsberg. The club was reorganized after World War II and adopted the Riegelsberg identity in 1953. Today, it is affiliated with the Saarländischer Schachverband and plays from its permanent club room in the Alte Malerschule on Kurze Straße. The club combines competitive team chess with an especially extensive youth program. During the 2025–2026 season, Riegelsberg fielded four adult teams and seven youth teams, ranging from the Oberliga Süd-West to Saarland leagues and U10–U16 competition. The Saarland federation currently records more than 160 members. Moreover, the club actively promotes girls’ and women’s chess, school chess, beginner programs, rapid and blitz tournaments, and community activities. Daniel Backes is the current President of Schachverein 1926 Riegelsberg. Riegelsberg reached the Saarland Landesklasse in 1966 and later established itself in the region’s highest competitions. During the 1980s, membership and team activity expanded significantly. The club also created its distinctive D-Zug tournament, an early Saarland event to use computer-assisted pairings and a competition that survives today in rapid-chess form. Youth development became increasingly important from the late 1960s onward. In 2010, the Deutsche Schachjugend recognized Riegelsberg with its “TOP Schachverein Kinder- und Jugendschach” quality designation. Its squad included experienced players such as Herbert Bastian, Jan Jeschke, Daniel Hoppstädter, Simon Windmüller, Meikel Jenner, Marlon Schäfer, Jonas Feidt, and several developing club players. Meanwhile, the club achieved strong results elsewhere in the league system. Its Verbandsliga team won its division, providing one of the highlights of the season. Riegelsberg also performed well in shorter team formats. In June 2026, the club finished third in the Saarland Rapid Team Championship, while its players remained active in Saarland cup, blitz, and individual championships throughout the year.

Youth chess is one of the defining strengths of Schachverein 1926 Riegelsberg. In the 2025–2026 season alone, the club entered seven junior teams across U10, U12, U14, and U16 competition. Results matched the scale of participation. The club’s U16 team became Saarland champion after winning all five matches and scoring 19.5 points from a possible 20. Riegelsberg also won the Saarland youth team championships in both the U14 and U12 categories. At the 2026 Saarland Youth Individual Championship, Riegelsberg supplied 29 of the 69 participants, the largest delegation from any club. Its young players also achieved several championship and podium results. The club extends this development work into schools and community programs. Beginner courses, school-chess projects, the Saarland Nachwuchscup, and regular training allow newcomers to move gradually from learning the rules into structured tournament play. Women’s and girls’ chess also has a significant place within the organization. In 2026, the club renewed this focus through its Damenflügel initiative, building on earlier recognition from the German Chess Federation for its work in girls’ and women’s chess.

Riegelsberg maintains an active tournament calendar alongside its league program. One of its traditional events is the D-Zug GrandPrix Turnier, which returns on September 6, 2026 during the Riegelsberg Marktfest. The tournament uses seven Swiss-system rounds at 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move and forms part of the Saarländischer Schnellschach Grand Prix 2026. The announced field is limited to 64 players, and the organizers distribute the complete entry-fee pool as prizes. Riegelsberg will also host the Offene Saarländische Schach-Einzelmeisterschaften 2026 from October 4–10 at the Köllertalhalle in Riegelsberg-Walpershofen. The championship program consists of four open sections: Meisterturnier, A-Turnier, B-Turnier, and C-Turnier. Players compete over seven rounds, with the principal sections using classical time controls and rating evaluation. An overall prize fund of approximately €2,000 has been announced. Together with league matches, youth tournaments, rapid events, cup competitions, and community chess, these events make the club active throughout almost the entire year.
