Singapore Chess Federation (SCF) is the national governing body for chess in Singapore. Founded in 1949, the federation oversees the development, administration, and promotion of chess nationwide. It is affiliated with FIDE and works within Singapore’s national sports structure. SCF organizes national championships, supports international representation, administers FIDE IDs, develops players and arbiters, and promotes chess through schools, community programs, and competitive events. The federation runs an extensive program covering standard, rapid, blitz, junior, school, senior, team, and high-performance chess. Its principal competitions include the Singapore National Chess Championships, National Rapid and Blitz Championships, National Schools Individual Championships, National Inter-School Team Championships, National Age-Group Championships, and the SG Chess League. In addition, SCF operates structured training pathways from beginner courses through the National Junior and National Training Squads, supported by Grandmasters and FIDE-qualified trainers. IM Dr. Hsu Li Yang is the current President of Singapore Chess Federation, while GM Kevin Goh Wei Ming serves as Chief Executive Officer and leads the federation’s professional management team. SCF has maintained a particularly active 2026 program, including the 77th National Chess Championships, the 24th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships hosted in Singapore in August, and the ongoing SG Chess League 2026. Its immediate upcoming events are the National Rapid and Blitz Championships on September 5–6, 2026, followed by the 67th National Inter-School Team Championships on September 12–13.

📜 History and Development

Singapore Chess Federation was established in 1949, with Professor Lim Kok Ann playing a central role in its creation and subsequent development. Known as the “Father of Singapore Chess,” Lim organized competitions, coached generations of players, raised support for chess, and helped establish the structures required for Singapore to participate internationally. SCF later became Singapore’s recognized national chess authority and developed stronger systems for player training, tournaments, international representation, and administration. An important milestone came in 2024, when Singapore hosted the FIDE World Chess Championship match between Ding Liren and Gukesh Dommaraju. SCF CEO GM Kevin Goh chaired the Local Organising Committee. The championship placed Singapore at the center of the international chess world and was accompanied by the Singapore International Open.

🎓 Training and High-Performance Chess

Player development is one of SCF’s principal responsibilities. The federation operates training courses ranging from Ultra Young and Beginner levels through Elementary, Intermediate, Developmental, and Junior Preparatory Squad programs. At the elite level, SCF maintains National Training Squads and formal selection procedures for Singapore representatives at international competitions. The current training structure includes GM/FST Thomas Luther as Training Director, GM/FT Andrey Kvon as Assistant Training Director, and WGM/FT Aleksandra Obolentseva among the national coaching team. The federation also provides financial assistance for eligible players and establishes selection standards for major international events. Therefore, promising players can progress from introductory training through national squads and ultimately represent Singapore in continental and world competition.

🏆 National Championships and League Chess

The 77th Singapore National Chess Championships were held in February 2026 at the Asian Civilisations Museum. The FIDE-rated championship used a classical 90+30 time control and offered a combined published prize fund of SGD 23,600 across the main and women’s prize structures. SCF also organizes national championships in shorter formats. The 2026 National Blitz Championship will take place on September 5, while the National Rapid Championship runs across September 5–6 at the federation’s Bishan premises. Meanwhile, the SCF SG Chess League 2026 runs from June 26 through October 30. The league provides sustained team competition throughout the year and complements the federation’s individual championship program. Senior players also have their own national competition. The 2026 Seniors National Chess Championships took place from April 24–May 2 at Bishan Community Club.

🌏 International and Regional Chess

Singapore continues to play an active role in Asian chess. From August 7–17, 2026, the country hosted the 24th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships at Our Tampines Hub. The championship included 16 junior categories from U6 through U20, separate Open and Girls competitions, adult 20–50 Premier and Challenger events, and senior categories for players aged 50+ and 65+. Participants competed in standard, rapid, and blitz chess, while the classical tournaments offered opportunities for direct FIDE titles and title norms under the applicable regulations. The Premier section alone carried a SGD 30,000 standard-chess prize fund. The event welcomed players from ASEAN federations together with invited dialogue-partner countries and territories, reinforcing Singapore’s role as a regional center for international chess events.

🎓 School Chess and Community Outreach

School chess is another major component of SCF’s work. The 77th National Schools Individual Chess Championships took place in March 2026, while the 67th National Inter-School Team Championships are scheduled for September 12–13, 2026. The federation also runs the National Age-Group Chess Championships, with the 41st edition scheduled for December 1–6, 2026 at One Punggol. Beyond competition, SCF develops outreach initiatives designed to make chess accessible to a wider community. Its From Pawns to Queens program works with schools and introduces students to structured chess training. In May 2026, for example, 35 pupils from Rulang Primary School visited SCF for assessments, instruction, and game review. Another important initiative is Chess for Freedom, which uses chess as part of rehabilitation programs within Singapore’s prison system. In June 2026, the Hong Leong Foundation provided additional support to expand the project.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

IM Dr. Hsu Li Yang serves as President of Singapore Chess Federation and remains directly involved in the federation’s high-performance selection structure. GM Kevin Goh Wei Ming serves as Chief Executive Officer and leads day-to-day federation operations. A seven-time Singapore champion and Grandmaster, Goh has also played an important organizational role in Singapore’s largest international chess events, including the 2024 World Championship. The professional structure includes national coaches, administration, finance, operations, and tournament staff. SCF also operates specialist committees covering areas such as high performance, training, arbiting, and athlete representation. Its current Arbiters Commission for 2025–2027, chaired by FA Lau Yan Han, focuses on developing a sustainable local arbiter system, improving policies, running seminars, and creating international opportunities for Singapore arbiters.
