Schachverein Caissa Wolfenbüttel e.V. is a chess club based in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony, Germany. The present organization was founded on June 22, 1971, through the merger of Schachgesellschaft Wolfenbüttel 1946 and Schach-Klub Wolfenbüttel 1957. The club belongs to the Lower Saxony chess structure through the Niedersächsischer Schachverband and Schachbezirk Braunschweig. Its regular home is the Elster- und Geitelhaus of Große Schule Wolfenbüttel on Rosenwall. The club combines league chess, youth development, regular training, city championships, internal competitions, rapid and blitz chess, and open tournaments. Club evenings take place every Tuesday, with children and juniors starting at 17:00 and adult activity beginning at 19:00. In addition, Caissa fields three league teams and maintains a full seasonal program that includes monthly blitz events, rapid tournaments, game-analysis evenings, club championships, and the Wolfenbüttel City Championship. Marc-Kevin Zehe is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact. Dietrich Möseler serves as Deputy Chairman and Tournament Director, while Sven Dörge is Youth Director and Karin Bilawer manages the club’s finances. The 2025–2026 season brought an important sporting achievement when Caissa’s first team won the Verbandsliga Ost and earned promotion. Meanwhile, the club has just completed the 20th Lessing Open, held from August 21–23, 2026, and has already started its 2026–2027 competitive program.

📜 History and Development

The present Caissa Wolfenbüttel organization emerged from two postwar chess clubs. Representatives of Schachgesellschaft Wolfenbüttel 1946 and Schach-Klub Wolfenbüttel 1957 signed their merger agreement in June 1971, creating a single club for organized chess in the city. The local chess tradition also includes several other historical groups. For example, Wolfenbütteler Schachfreunde briefly operated after the merger, while Schachverein Philippsberg represented players from the Wolfenbüttel correctional institution and even participated in official Braunschweig district team competitions. One of the most notable individual achievements connected with Wolfenbüttel chess came from Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Kraft, who won the 1991–1995 Correspondence Chess European Championship. He remains closely associated with the club and continues to contribute to its training program.

♜ Team Chess and the 2025–2026 Promotion

Caissa Wolfenbüttel currently operates three adult teams, giving members access to several levels of organized competition. The first team had an outstanding 2025–2026 Verbandsliga Ost campaign. Caissa won eight of its nine matches and finished first with 16 match points and 53 board points. Its results included 7½–½ victories against Hildesheimer SV II and SG Gifhorn-Wolfsburg II, as well as convincing wins against Rochade Braunschweig and SC Bad Salzdetfurth. The championship secured promotion for the first team to the next level of the Lower Saxony league structure. Sven Dörge serves as team captain. Caissa II continues in the Bezirksliga, while Caissa III competes in the district structure. Consequently, members of different playing strengths can participate in regular team chess.

🎓 Youth Chess and Club Activity

Youth chess forms an established part of the club’s weekly program. Children and teenagers meet every Tuesday from 17:00, before the adult club evening begins. Sven Dörge currently leads the youth section. Young members can progress from training into rapid, blitz, classical, and team competitions. The club has also hosted regional junior championships, including age-group events organized within the Braunschweig chess district. The wider club calendar remains active throughout the year. The 2026–2027 monthly blitz series began on August 18, shortly before the new league season. September also includes a three-evening rapid tournament, while October features further blitz competition and a specialist training session with Prof. Karl-Heinz Kraft. These activities give members regular opportunities to play and analyze chess between official league matches and larger tournaments.

🏆 Lessing Open

The Lessing Open is Caissa Wolfenbüttel’s flagship tournament. The club organized the first edition in 2005, and the competition has since developed into an established event with participation from across Lower Saxony and other parts of Germany. The 20th Lessing Open took place from August 21–23, 2026 at the Lindenhalle in Wolfenbüttel. It formed part of the NSV Grand Prix 2026. Players competed over five Swiss-system rounds in three rating sections. The A Open was submitted for both FIDE Elo and German DWZ rating, while the B and C sections were evaluated for DWZ. The time control was 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. For the anniversary edition, every board was available for live transmission. Caissa organized the event with support from the Niedersächsischer Schachverband, Schachbezirk Braunschweig, the City of Wolfenbüttel, and neighboring chess clubs. The tournament remains the centerpiece of the club’s public calendar and complements its city championships, internal tournaments, rapid chess, and monthly blitz series.
