Schachverband Württemberg e.V., commonly known as SVW, is the regional governing body for organized chess in Württemberg, Germany. The association traces its history to 1910 and operates as a member association of the German Chess Federation. It coordinates official chess activity for clubs and players across its regional structure.
The federation manages competition rules, league structures, championships, player administration, and other services for its affiliated chess community. Its organization covers six regional districts: Alb/Schwarzwald, Neckar/Fils, Oberschwaben, Ostalb, Stuttgart, and Unterland. These districts also manage competitions and chess development within their respective areas.
SVW works with local chess clubs, tournament organizers, arbiters, trainers, officials, and volunteers. Dr. Carsten Karthaus serves as president, while Thomas Wiedmann manages the federation office. The federation also maintains a dedicated youth structure through Württembergische Schachjugend.
🏆 Chess Events and Competitions
Schachverband Württemberg organizes and supports official individual and team competitions in classical, rapid, and blitz chess. Its tournament program includes Württemberg championships, cup competitions, league events, amateur tournament series, youth competitions, and events for women and senior players.
Confirmed competitions include the Württemberg Individual Championship, Württemberg Individual Blitz Championship, Württemberg Team Blitz Championship, Württemberg Rapid Team Championship, and Württemberg Team Cup. The federation also works with the Badischer Schachverband on selected joint Baden-Württemberg championships.
The Württembergische Amateurmeisterschaft, known as WAM, gives players regular tournament opportunities at participating clubs across the region. The federation’s competition structure allows local clubs to host events while SVW provides the wider tournament framework, regulations, and qualification pathways.

SVW provides information and services for affiliated clubs and chess players. Its official website contains competition regulations, tournament announcements, calendars, results services, contact directories, training information, and material for organizers. Players can also use the federation’s systems to follow regional league and championship activity.
Youth chess forms an important part of the federation structure. Württembergische Schachjugend coordinates youth competitions and tournament series for different age groups. These activities include junior championships, youth cup tournaments, amateur events, school chess, training, and development programs.
The federation also supports chess beyond elite competition. Its work covers grassroots chess, women’s chess, senior chess, school chess, training, arbiters, club development, and public communication. Through its regional districts and affiliated clubs, Schachverband Württemberg creates regular opportunities for players of different ages and playing strengths.
