♟️ About Rotterdam Chess

Rotterdam Chess is an independent chess tournament project based in Rotterdam, Netherlands, created and run by Ben Koppenens. It is not a conventional membership chess club. Instead, the project focuses on organizing accessible FIDE-rated classical tournaments in Rotterdam, with clear online registration, published regulations, rating-based sections, and a compact weekend schedule. Its principal event is the Rotterdam FIDE Weekend, held at Klooster het Oude Noorden in the northern part of the city. Rotterdam Chess launched its FIDE Weekend tournament in 2025. The event gives Dutch and international players an opportunity to complete five serious classical games from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. Players are divided into Open, Major, and Minor groups according to FIDE rating, creating competitive sections for different playing strengths. Games are submitted for both FIDE and KNSB rating, while the tournament welcomes club players, juniors, titled players, and international visitors. Ben Koppenens is the organizer and principal public contact for Rotterdam Chess. He is also an active club player with RSR Ivoren Toren and works in chess beyond the Rotterdam FIDE Weekend through ChessMates International, where he serves in Public Affairs. Following the successful first Rotterdam FIDE Weekend in October 2025, the tournament is returning from October 9–11, 2026, with capacity expanded from 60 to 120 players.

📜 Development of the Rotterdam FIDE Weekend

The first Rotterdam FIDE Weekend took place from October 17–19, 2025 at Klooster het Oude Noorden. Rotterdam Chess introduced the tournament to provide a dedicated FIDE-rated weekend event in the city. The inaugural edition had a maximum capacity of 60 players, and registrations filled quickly. Competition was divided into three rating groups: an Open section, a Major section, and a Minor section. The project also cooperated with ChessEngland.com for the first edition, helping give the new tournament an international dimension. After the strong response in 2025, Koppenens decided to continue the event and substantially increase its capacity for 2026.

🏆 Rotterdam FIDE Weekend 2026

The second Rotterdam FIDE Weekend is scheduled for October 9–11, 2026 at Klooster het Oude Noorden, Ruivenstraat 81 in Rotterdam. Players will compete over five Swiss-system rounds with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The event is submitted for both FIDE and Dutch KNSB rating. The field is divided into three groups. The Open section has no upper rating limit, while the Major section is for players below 1900 and the Minor section for players below 1650. The organizer retains responsibility for final section placement if a participant’s rating changes before the tournament. The 2026 edition has increased its maximum capacity to 120 players, twice the size of the inaugural event. The published prize structure includes overall and rating prizes across the three sections. In addition, IMs and GMs receive free entry, while players experiencing financial difficulty can contact the organizer about reduced entry costs.

♜ Tournament Format and Player Experience

Rotterdam Chess deliberately uses a compact weekend structure. Round one begins on Friday evening, followed by two rounds on Saturday and two on Sunday. Therefore, players can complete a full FIDE-rated classical tournament without committing to a week-long event. Participants may request up to two half-point byes in advance for rounds one through four. Pairings are produced using Swiss-Manager, and the tournament operates with digital publication of results and pairings. The venue, Klooster het Oude Noorden, is a community center in Rotterdam-Noord rather than the permanent office of the organizer. It hosts the tournament playing hall and provides space for the expanding field.

🏛️ Organizer and Rotterdam Chess Community

Ben Koppenens created Rotterdam Chess around his tournament-organizing activity and remains directly responsible for player communication and the Rotterdam FIDE Weekend. He is also involved with the wider Rotterdam chess community. Koppenens plays for RSR Ivoren Toren, one of Rotterdam’s established chess clubs, and contributes tournament announcements and reports to Dutch chess media. Internationally, he serves in Public Affairs for ChessMates International, a nonprofit organization using youth chess and international exchanges to bring young players from different countries together.
