♟️ About the Organizer
Nigeria Chess Federation, commonly known as NCF, is the national governing body for chess in Nigeria. FIDE records the federation as established in 1975. Today, it represents Nigerian chess within FIDE and coordinates the country’s international chess relations.
The federation regulates and promotes chess across Nigeria’s states and geopolitical zones. Its responsibilities include tournament sanctioning, FIDE rating administration, player registration, national team selection, and official representation. In addition, NCF supports the training of arbiters, coaches, organizers, and other chess officials.
Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo serves as president following the federation’s 2025 elective congress. Prince Adewole Adeyinka Samuel serves as vice president, while Ejiro Thukson holds the position of secretary general. Moreover, the board includes representatives for players, technical matters, international relations, regional zones, and institutional partners.
The federation’s national office operates from the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. From there, NCF works with state chess associations, clubs, academies, schools, tournament organizers, and national sports authorities. Therefore, it connects grassroots chess with Nigeria’s national and international competition structure.
🏆 National Championships and International Events
The Nigeria National Chess Championships form a central part of the federation’s competitive program. The championships bring together leading players through qualification events, rating sections, junior competitions, and invitational finals. In addition, the federation manages national titles for both Open and Women’s competition.
NCF also coordinates national team championships and chess competitions within major multi-sport events. For example, it worked with the National Sports Commission during the 2025 National Sports Festival in Ogun State. Certified arbiters managed the competition, while players represented states from across Nigeria.
Nigeria has also hosted several important African events. Lagos staged the 2022 African Individual Chess Championship. Moreover, the country hosted the 2025 FIDE Zone 4.2 West Africa Chess Championship. That zonal event welcomed players from eight West African federations, while Nigerian competitors won four of the six medals.
The federation will host the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2026 in Abuja. The competition runs from August 1–8 and includes Open and Women’s categories at Under-1700, Under-2000, and Under-2300 level. Consequently, the event will award 12 world titles across rapid and blitz chess.
NCF also supports Nigeria’s participation in the Chess Olympiad, African championships, zonal competitions, junior events, and other FIDE tournaments. It handles eligibility, federation registration, team selection, and official entries. Furthermore, it provides Nigerian players with access to FIDE identification and international rating opportunities.
The federation sanctions competitions organized by clubs, academies, state associations, and independent organizers. It also publishes approved events and monitors compliance with FIDE rules. As a result, organizers can submit tournaments for official recognition and rating under the Nigerian federation.
🌱 Youth Chess, Education and National Development
Youth and grassroots development remain major priorities for the Nigeria Chess Federation. The federation supports emerging players through state programs, community initiatives, junior championships, and school-based activities. Moreover, it aims to create a pathway from introductory chess to national and international competition.
Chess education forms an important part of this work. In January 2023, Nigeria hosted its first in-person FIDE Chess in Schools School Instructor training course. The program brought together teachers, chess trainers, and educators in Lagos. In total, 26 participants passed the examination and earned the FIDE School Instructor title.
The current federation board has identified school integration as a strategic priority. It also plans further teacher workshops, professional certification, and cooperation with educational institutions. In addition, the federation wants to strengthen coordination with state associations through improved membership and player-management systems.
NCF also promotes professional development for arbiters, coaches, and tournament organizers. These programs improve technical standards and support more FIDE-rated events across the country. Therefore, players outside the largest cities can gain better access to formal competition.
The federation also supports women’s chess and junior representation. Its board includes dedicated institutional and player representatives, while national events provide separate opportunities for women and young competitors. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s emerging players continue to achieve strong results in national, African, and international competitions.
Through governance, education, tournaments, and international representation, the Nigeria Chess Federation supports every level of the national chess structure. Beginners can enter through schools and community programs. At the same time, leading players can pursue national titles, international ratings, and selection for Team Nigeria.
