♟️ About Machida Chess Club

Machida Chess Club (町田チェスクラブ) is a chess club based in Machida, Tokyo, Japan. The Japan Chess Federation officially accredited the organization as a registered club from November 2024. It was created as an accessible place for people to play over-the-board chess in western Tokyo and explicitly welcomes complete beginners as well as experienced tournament players. Regular club meetings are primarily held at Machida Central Public Hall. The club combines informal community chess with competitive activity. It normally holds Machida meetings about twice per month and also organizes outdoor chess sessions at Yoyogi Park during spring and autumn. In addition, members represent Machida in team competition, while the club has expanded into FIDE-rated tournament organization. Machida finished fifth in Group A of the All Japan Team Chess Championship in both 2023 and 2025, with the 2025 team also receiving a special award. Ken Okita (沖田 健) is the current representative and principal public contact for Machida Chess Club. Eugene Hatfield is listed by the Japan Chess Federation as Vice Representative. In 2026, the club substantially expanded its rated tournament activity by organizing the Machida Summer Rapid Open and preparing the three-day Machida Silver Week Open 2026, scheduled for September 19–21.

Current club activity is centered on Machida Central Public Hall, where meetings are announced individually through the club’s social media. Recent 2026 sessions have allowed participants to arrive or leave during the meeting rather than requiring attendance for the entire session. The club also runs park chess at Yoyogi Park during the spring and autumn months. These informal outdoor gatherings create a different environment from rated tournament chess and help make the game accessible to passersby and recreational players.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Machida Chess Club has moved beyond regular meetings into officially rated tournament organization under the Japan Chess Federation. On July 5, 2026, the club organized the Machida Summer Rapid Open 2026 at the Machida City Lifelong Learning Center. The tournament used five Swiss-system rounds at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move and was submitted for both FIDE Rapid and Japan national rating. Ken Okita served as Tournament Director, while NA Minrui Wang was Chief Arbiter and NA Yuya Sato served as Deputy Arbiter. This event established a formal FIDE-rated component within the club’s growing competition program.

🌟 Machida Silver Week Open 2026

The club’s principal upcoming tournament is the Machida Silver Week Open 2026, scheduled for September 19–21, 2026 at Machida Civic Hall. Players will compete over six Swiss-system rounds with a classical time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Results will count toward both FIDE Standard and Japan Chess Federation Standard ratings. The tournament offers a total prize fund of JPY 200,000, with prizes for the top eight finishers as well as additional rating-class awards. Ken Okita is the organizer and Tournament Director, while NA Minrui Wang serves as Chief Arbiter. By staging both rapid and classical FIDE-rated tournaments in 2026, Machida Chess Club is developing a competitive program that complements its more informal meetings and park-chess activities.

🏛️ Organization

Ken Okita is the representative officially registered with the Japan Chess Federation and remains directly responsible for club communication and tournament organization. Eugene Hatfield serves as Vice Representative. Together with other members and tournament officials, the club supports a mix of beginner-friendly chess, casual meetings, team competition, and officially rated events in the Tokyo area.
