Guernsey Chess Federation & Club

♟️ About the Organizer

Guernsey Chess Federation & Club is the main chess body for Guernsey and supports both competitive and social chess on the island. The federation connects local players with organized chess activity, while the club gives residents and visitors a regular place to play. It also represents Guernsey within the wider chess community through federation work, FIDE-rated events, and international participation.

The club meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30pm at Les Cotils. Visitors are welcome, which makes it useful for traveling players who want a friendly chess session during a stay in Guernsey. In addition, the organization shares updates through its website and social media channels under the GuernseyChess name.

🏆 Chess Events and Activities

Guernsey Chess Federation plays a central role in the BWCI Guernsey International Chess Festival, one of the island’s best-known chess events. The festival started in October 1975 at the Old Government House Hotel and has developed into a long-running international tournament week. The 2026 edition marks the 50th festival and returns to the Peninsula Hotel, a venue closely linked with the event’s history.

The festival offers FIDE-rated classical chess, with Open and Challengers sections, one round per day, and a blitz event as part of the program. It also includes a prizegiving dinner, which strengthens the social side of the tournament week. Therefore, the event attracts both serious competitors and players who enjoy a traditional chess festival atmosphere.

Beyond the international festival, the federation and club run local chess activities throughout the year. These include summer and winter league play, blitz tournaments, junior chess, beginner courses, and inter-island matches. As a result, Guernsey Chess Federation & Club supports both experienced players and people who are still building their chess confidence.

🌍 Player Experience and Community

Players who visit Guernsey can expect a chess community with strong local roots and international links. The regular Tuesday club night gives newcomers a simple way to meet island players. Meanwhile, the festival gives visiting players a full tournament week with rated games, social activity, and time to enjoy Guernsey between rounds.

The organizer also supports youth and development activity. Junior chess sessions target young players, while beginner courses help adults learn the rules, basic tactics, and checkmating techniques. In addition, Guernsey players regularly take part in representative events, including European Small Nations competitions and inter-insular matches with Jersey.

This mix of local club chess, island representation, and international festival organization gives Guernsey Chess Federation & Club a clear place in Channel Islands chess. It offers practical tournament management, regular community activity, and a welcoming environment for players who want competitive chess in Guernsey.
