♟️ About Fraser Valley Chess Academy

Fraser Valley Chess Academy (FVCA) is a chess academy, club network, and tournament organizer headquartered in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. Established in 2022 by Umang Banatwala and Khushboo Banatwala, the organization combines chess education with a large program of rated tournaments and community chess. Its main center is located at Unit 108, 20486 64 Avenue in Langley, while programs now extend to several communities across British Columbia and newer locations in Ontario and Alberta. FVCA provides group and private lessons, after-school programs, chess camps, weekly club sessions, scholastic competitions, and CFC- and FIDE-rated tournaments. The academy reports that it has taught more than 5,000 students, worked with 50+ British Columbia schools, and organized more than 120 tournaments since its establishment. Its competitive calendar ranges from student rapid events and monthly club blitz tournaments to major classical opens, provincial championships, and international-rated events. FA Umang Banatwala is Co-Founder and CEO and is the principal public contact for Fraser Valley Chess Club in the current British Columbia Chess Federation directory. He also serves as Vice-President of the British Columbia Chess Federation for 2026–2027. NM Ryan Leong, another important member of the FVCA chess community, currently serves as BCCF Junior Coordinator and was Team BC captain for the 2026 Intermat. Following a busy summer tournament program, FVCA’s next major event is the Langley Open from September 5–7, 2026, followed by the Thanksgiving Open, BC Closed & BC Women’s Championship from October 9–12.

🎓 Chess Education and Community Programs

Chess education is central to FVCA’s work. The academy provides programs for beginners through competitive tournament players, with instruction available through its Langley headquarters and a growing network of partner locations. Current locations include programs in Langley, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam, Abbotsford, South Surrey, Fleetwood, and West Kelowna, together with online instruction. During 2026, FVCA also expanded beyond British Columbia through initiatives in Mississauga, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta. The academy runs extensive after-school chess programs and holiday camps. Summer 2026 camps in Langley and Port Coquitlam combine lessons, puzzles, game analysis, and tournament-style practice. Consequently, students can progress directly from structured instruction into competitive events organized by the same organization.

♜ Club and Regular Tournament Chess

FVCA operates the Fraser Valley Chess Club, with regular Thursday sessions at its Langley center. The club also runs a popular Monthly Blitz Series, which began in 2025 and has expanded to additional Lower Mainland locations. The organization maintains separate Fraser Valley Classical and Rapid Series. The classical series provides CFC-rated longer games for both juniors and adults, while the rapid series uses a 15+10 time control and includes age-based sections together with an Open section. In 2026, FVCA also organized the inaugural Summer Champions Open from July 30–August 3. The main tournament featured nine rounds at 90+30, with the Open section submitted for both FIDE and CFC rating.

🏆 Major British Columbia Chess Events

Fraser Valley Chess Academy has expanded beyond its own club tournaments to organize significant events on the British Columbia chess calendar. The academy organized the Keres Memorial 2026 from May 16–18 in Richmond. It has also played an important role in the BC Youth Chess Championship, inter-school competitions, and Team BC activities. For the 2026 Intermat, the traditional British Columbia versus Washington junior match, FA Umang Banatwala led the BC delegation together with NM Ryan Leong as Team Captain. Selection was coordinated through the BCCF Junior Committee. FVCA has also announced an important future milestone: it has been selected as the official organizer of the Canadian Youth Chess Championship and Canadian Open in Richmond, British Columbia, in 2028.

🌟 Autumn and Winter 2026

The Langley Open 2026 will take place from September 5–7 at Brookswood Seniors Centre. The tournament consists of six classical rounds, with the Open section rated by both FIDE and the Chess Federation of Canada. The next major event is the Thanksgiving Open 2026, BC Closed & BC Women’s Championship, scheduled for October 9–12 at Comfort Inn & Suites in Surrey. This seven-round program combines an Open tournament with two of British Columbia’s principal championship competitions. FVCA will then organize Fraser Valley Classical 7 on October 17–18, followed by the Scholastic Junior Rapid Championship on November 8 in Port Coquitlam. The year concludes with the Goodbye 2026 Open from December 26–30 at Fraser Valley Chess Academy in Langley. The tournament is planned as a nine-round classical event with FIDE- and CFC-rated sections, accompanied by a bonus blitz competition.
