♟️ About Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar – Sección de Ajedrez
Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar – Sección de Ajedrez is the chess section of Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar, a major multi-sport and social club in Zaragoza, Aragón, Spain. The chess section operates from the club’s facilities at Calle Argualas 50, Zaragoza. It combines federation competition, chess instruction, junior development, tournaments, and regular competitive activity. The section has developed a substantial presence in Aragonese chess. It enters numerous teams in the Campeonato de Aragón por Equipos, maintains an established chess school, and regularly hosts federation championships. Moreover, El Olivar has organized the Trofeo Ciudad de Zaragoza chess tournament for many years. The competition reached its 21st edition in 2026. Eduardo de la Riva Fernández currently serves as Delegate of the Chess Section and represents it within the governing structure of Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar. Meanwhile, International Master Diego Del Rey Santos plays a central role in the section’s competitive and educational activities. He coaches players, organizes events, competes for El Olivar, and serves as the principal public contact for the 2026 Trofeo Ibercaja Ciudad de Zaragoza.🏆 Trofeo Ibercaja Ciudad de Zaragoza
The Trofeo Ibercaja Ciudad de Zaragoza de Ajedrez is the section’s principal recurring open tournament. Official El Olivar records explicitly identify the Chess Section as the event organizer, while Ibercaja and Zaragoza’s municipal sports authorities support the competition. The XXI Trofeo Ibercaja Ciudad de Zaragoza 2026 takes place on October 3 at Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar. Players compete over nine Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 12 minutes plus three seconds per move. In addition, the tournament forms part of both the Circuito Aragonés 2026 and the Circuito Aragonés Master +55. The 2026 prize structure includes substantial overall and rating-group awards. Moreover, junior competitors receive dedicated prizes in the U8, U10, and U12 categories. The tournament regularly attracts strong players. For example, more than 100 participants competed in the 2025 edition, including 25 internationally titled players. IM Alfonso Llorente won that tournament, while the event again brought together leading Aragonese players and visitors from outside the region.🎓 Chess School and Player Development
AjedrezOlivar, the section’s chess school, provides structured training for children and developing competitive players. The program includes introductory instruction, improvement groups, and advanced training for players who want to represent El Olivar in federation competitions. IM Diego Del Rey Santos is one of the leading coaches associated with the school. The training team has also included titled and qualified instructors such as FM David Galstyan, Miguel Miranda, Marino Veras, Jesús Maisterra, and Aarón Maisterra. The section places particular emphasis on junior development. Therefore, young players can progress from introductory chess into stronger training groups and eventually join El Olivar’s federation teams. El Olivar also hosts regional youth competition. In April 2026, the venue staged the Aragón U10 and U12 Championships and other regional school-age championship activity. Consequently, the club serves both its own chess school and the wider Aragonese junior chess community.♜ Team Chess and Competitive Achievements
El Olivar fields a particularly broad range of teams in the Aragón Team Championship. Federation records for 2026 show multiple El Olivar squads competing across different divisions, which creates playing opportunities for established competitors, developing adults, and juniors. The El Olivar B team achieved an important result in March 2026. It won the Preferente category and earned promotion. In addition, other El Olivar teams competed throughout the regional structure during the same season. The section also has a strong record in junior competition. Its players have won regional age-group titles, while El Olivar teams have achieved success in Aragonese school and youth championships. This broad team structure supports the section’s development model. Players can begin in the chess school, move into youth competition, and later represent the club in senior federation leagues.🌟 Masterclasses and Chess Events
El Olivar supplements tournaments and league chess with special instructional events. These activities have included masterclasses, simultaneous exhibitions, training sessions, and public chess demonstrations. As part of the 2026 Ciudad de Zaragoza chess program, the section schedules a masterclass with Grandmaster Jesús María de la Villa García on October 4. De la Villa is a two-time Spanish Champion and an internationally recognized chess author and trainer. The session takes place at the El Olivar Chess Section and is free for participants in the preceding Trofeo Ibercaja Ciudad de Zaragoza. Therefore, the tournament weekend combines rapid competition with high-level chess education. The section has previously welcomed other distinguished players as well. For example, Spanish Grandmaster Francisco Vallejo Pons has taken part in exhibitions and tournament activities at El Olivar.🤝 Chess in Zaragoza and Community Activity
The Chess Section participates in the wider sporting and community program of Estadio Miralbueno El Olivar. Its members have taken part in public sports days and introductory activities designed to present chess to new players. Moreover, the permanent El Olivar facilities allow the section to host tournaments of very different sizes. Regional youth championships, team matches, chess-school sessions, rapid competitions, and special events can all take place within the same sporting complex. The section also maintains its own online presence through AjedrezOlivar, including a dedicated chess website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel. These platforms publish tournament news, club results, instructional activity, and material from the Trofeo Ciudad de Zaragoza.
