♟️ About Eskilstuna Schackklubb
Eskilstuna Schackklubb (Eskilstuna SK) is a historic chess club based in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Organized chess in the city dates to 1909, when two separate clubs were established. These organizations eventually merged in 1960 to form the present Eskilstuna Schackklubb. Today, the club plays at its dedicated premises on Sveavägen 50 beside Skogsängens IP and provides classical, rapid, blitz, team, junior, and school chess. Eskilstuna SK maintains an active competitive program through club championships, the Eskilstuna Championship, rapid and blitz championships, Trettondagsblixten, Södermanlands district competitions, and Swedish team chess. The club had 31 members in 2025 and returned to Division 1 of the Swedish Allsvenskan for the 2025–2026 season after winning its Division 2 group in 2024–2025. It also supports junior development through club training, Schackfyran school chess, and participation in national youth competitions. FM Harald Lögdahl is the current Chairman and Treasurer of Eskilstuna Schackklubb and serves as its principal public contact. The club’s 2026 activity has included the traditional Trettondagsblixten, Eskilstuna Championship, rapid and blitz competitions, Swedish league play, and school chess. Its next major open event is Södermanlands Öppna DM 2026, scheduled for October 24–25 at the club premises.📜 History and Development
Eskilstuna has a documented chess tradition extending into the late 19th century. However, the direct predecessors of the present club were founded in March 1909. Schacksällskapet Kamraterna was established on March 9 and later became Eskilstuna Schacksällskap. Five days later, Arbetarnes Schackklubb was founded and subsequently became Eskilstuna Allmänna Schackklubb. Both organizations contributed significantly to chess in the city. The Eskilstuna Championship began in 1918, while Eskilstuna also hosted Swedish Chess Federation congress tournaments in 1920 and 1971. One particularly prominent player from Eskilstuna Allmänna was Åke Stenborg, Swedish Champion in 1956 and a Swedish Olympiad representative. In 1960, Eskilstuna Schacksällskap and Eskilstuna Allmänna Schackklubb merged to create Eskilstuna Schackklubb. The club has since maintained local championships, team competition, junior activity, and recurring open tournaments.♜ Team Chess
Eskilstuna SK won Division 2, Group 4 of the 2024–2025 Swedish Allsvenskan, earning promotion to Division 1 for the following season. During 2025–2026, the first team competed in Division 1, Group 2 against clubs including Wasa SK II, Burgsvik Alva SK, Örebro SS, Västerås SK II, Södra SASS, and SK Rockaden Stockholm IV. The club organizes several recurring competitions across different time controls. The traditional Trettondagsblixten has been played since 1978 and remains closely associated with chess in Eskilstuna. The 2026 edition attracted 32 players and was won by Kim Nygren, with Harald Lögdahl finishing third. Eskilstuna SK also stages the annual Eskilstuna Championship (EM). In 2026, Harald Lögdahl won the seven-round championship with 6.5/7, ahead of Axel Bergman and Ulf Lögdahl. Bergman subsequently won the 2026 Eskilstuna Rapid Championship. The club’s principal upcoming open competition is Södermanlands Öppna DM 2026, scheduled for October 24–25, 2026. The seven-round modified Swiss combines four FIDE Rapid-rated games at 10+5 with three FIDE Standard-rated games at 90+30. The highest-finishing eligible Södermanland player earns the district championship title.🎓 Junior and School Chess
Eskilstuna SK continues to maintain junior activity before its regular club evenings. Younger members also compete in regional and national competitions. The club made its Kadettallsvenskan debut in 2025, finishing eighth in the Stockholm qualifying group. Several Eskilstuna juniors have also achieved strong results in Swedish school and youth championships. School chess is another important part of the club’s outreach. Eskilstuna SK works actively with Schackfyran, visits local school classes and school chess clubs, and helps organize qualifying competitions in Södermanland. In 2026, the club reported cooperation with ten school chess clubs in Eskilstuna.🏛️ Organization and Leadership
Harald Lögdahl was re-elected Chairman of Eskilstuna Schackklubb at the club’s 2026 annual meeting. He also serves as Treasurer, rating officer, webmaster, and captain of the first team.
