Club de Ajedrez Torrelodones is a chess club based in Torrelodones, Madrid, Spain. Founded in 2011 through the initiative of Francisco Osorio, the club promotes competitive and recreational chess in the municipality and the surrounding northwest Madrid area. It participates in competitions connected with the Federación Madrileña de Ajedrez while also maintaining a broad local program for children, adults, federated players, and newcomers to the game. The club combines Madrid team-league competition with chess training, junior development, social tournaments, rapid events, community activities, and larger open competitions. Its annual program includes the Torneo de las Fiestas del Carmen, youth and social events, a charity tournament supporting the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, and the growing Torrelodones Chess Festival. Moreover, junior members compete in the Agrupación Deportiva de la Sierra circuit and other tournaments across the Community of Madrid. Yolanda Saiz Poveda is the current President of Club de Ajedrez Torrelodones. The 2025–2026 season became an important competitive milestone when the club’s first team secured promotion to Primera División of the Liga Madrileña, while its second team also earned promotion. In June 2026, the Ayuntamiento de Torrelodones recognized the organization as the municipality’s Best Club at its local sports awards. The club’s next major event is the II Festival de Ajedrez de Torrelodones – Memorial Ramón Torres, scheduled for September 18–27, 2026.

📜 History and Development

Club de Ajedrez Torrelodones was founded in 2011 by a group led by Francisco Osorio. Competition, youth development, and chess instruction formed the main pillars of the organization from its early years. The club progressed rapidly through the Madrid team structure. By its second season, its leading team had already earned promotion to Primera División. Over the following years, however, results moved between divisions as the organization expanded its membership and developed additional teams. Leadership later passed to Héctor Aguilera Alonso, who served as President during an important period of growth. More recently, Yolanda Saiz Poveda became President and currently leads the club. The organization has continued to expand its competitive and community program. This work received municipal recognition on June 4, 2026, when Club de Ajedrez Torrelodones received the award for the best local sports club during the Torrelodones sports gala.

♜ Team Chess and the 2026 Promotion

Federated team chess remains one of the club’s principal competitive activities. During the 2025–2026 Liga Madrileña, the first team pursued a promotion target that the club had narrowly missed the previous season. On February 22, 2026, Torrelodones defeated Colmenarejo Chess Club B by 4–2. With two rounds still remaining, the result mathematically secured promotion to Primera División. The club’s second team also earned promotion, moving into Segunda División. Consequently, Torrelodones entered a new stage in its team structure, with its principal squads competing at progressively stronger levels. The club plans to use these promotions to support player development rather than concentrating exclusively on the strongest lineup. President Yolanda Saiz Poveda has identified the continued integration of talented younger players into stronger competitive teams as an important objective for future seasons.

🎓 Youth Chess and Community Activity

Youth development plays an important role in Club de Ajedrez Torrelodones. Young members receive opportunities to train, participate in club activities, and represent Torrelodones in competitions organized through the Agrupación Deportiva de la Sierra and other Madrid chess events. The club also runs dedicated junior competitions. The III Torneo Social Infantil took place in June 2026, while young Torrelodones players achieved several podium finishes during the 2025–2026 ADS tournament season. At the same time, the organization maintains events designed for the wider community. The traditional Torneo de Ajedrez de las Fiestas del Carmen reached its 14th edition in July 2026. In addition, Torrelodones maintains an annual chess partnership with Peñamellera, which reached its 10th Hermanamiento Peñamellera–Torrelodones in 2026. The club’s charity tournament has also become an established annual activity. On May 30, 2026, the fourth edition of its tournament supporting the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer raised a record €847. All proceeds were donated to the organization for cancer research and assistance to patients and their families.

🏆 II Festival de Ajedrez de Torrelodones – Memorial Ramón Torres 2026

The II Festival de Ajedrez de Torrelodones – Memorial Ramón Torres is scheduled from September 18–27, 2026 at Torreforum in Torrelodones. Club de Ajedrez Torrelodones organizes the festival in cooperation with the Ayuntamiento de Torrelodones. The festival commemorates Ramón Torres Grajales, a former club player and respected member of the Madrid chess community. His son and current Torrelodones player Rafael Torres Samper serves as Tournament Director. The main Open consists of nine Swiss-system rounds and is divided into two rating groups. Games use a classical time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move, and results count for FIDE Standard rating. A separate FIDE-rated rapid tournament uses 10 minutes + 3 seconds per move over nine rounds.. In addition, the festival concludes with a Masnou-style tournament in Plaza de la Constitución, extending the program beyond standard rated competition and encouraging broader public participation. The festival follows the successful inaugural edition held in 2025. Therefore, it is developing into the club’s principal multi-day tournament project and an important part of the annual chess program in Torrelodones.
