Club Ajedrez Teruel is an established chess organization based in Teruel, Aragón, Spain. The club states that it was founded in 1972 and has maintained an active role in competitive and community chess in the province for more than five decades. Its activities include team competition, individual championships, open tournaments, junior events, chess instruction, and promotional activities. The club operates from its chess room at the Polideportivo San Fernando, a municipal sports complex on Calle Barbastro in Teruel. The venue hosts regular club activities, championships, training, and tournaments. Club Ajedrez Teruel also participates in competitions organized within the Federación Aragonesa de Ajedrez structure. An important part of the club’s work is making chess accessible to both adults and young players. The City of Teruel identifies tournament participation and chess classes for children and adults among the organization’s regular activities. 🏆 Tournaments & Competitive Chess

Club Ajedrez Teruel organizes a varied calendar of competitive events. These include the Campeonato Individual Ciudad de Teruel, summer tournaments, rapid and blitz competitions, junior events, and tournaments held elsewhere in the province. The club regularly organizes the Torneo de Verano de Teruel, staged at its Polideportivo San Fernando headquarters. It has also organized tournaments in Mora de Rubielos, providing both open and junior competitions and helping extend organized chess activity beyond the city of Teruel. Mario Navarro is a regular tournament contact for these events. A major new step in the club’s tournament program is the I Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Teruel 2026, scheduled for December 18–20. Club Ajedrez Teruel is the official organizer. The seven-round Swiss tournament is open to players rated below 2400 and is valid for both FIDE and FEDA rating. The club also participates in Aragón team chess. Over recent seasons, its players have competed at several regional levels, continuing a long tradition of representing Teruel in official team competition.

🌱 Junior Chess & Community Development

Junior chess forms an important part of Club Ajedrez Teruel’s activities. The organization has worked with the Municipal Chess School of Teruel, providing structured chess instruction for children and helping young players progress toward tournament participation. The club has organized recurring youth competitions such as the Comarca Comunidad de Teruel tournaments. These events have included age categories for younger players and have formed part of the Aragón junior competition circuit. Community outreach is another established element of its work. Club Ajedrez Teruel has organized public simultaneous exhibitions during the Fiestas del Ángel, including events in the Plaza del Torico. In 2025, the club organized a simultaneous exhibition with chess master Claudio Minzer, bringing competitive chess into a prominent public setting in the city.

The launch of the Ciudad de Teruel International Chess Tournament in 2026 represents an expansion of this activity into an international FIDE-rated format. Together with its provincial tournaments, junior chess, team competition, and community events, it strengthens the club’s role in organized chess in Teruel.
