♟️ About Austrian Chess Federation

The Austrian Chess Federation is Austria’s national governing body for chess. It operates under the German name Österreichischer Schachbund (ÖSB). The federation was founded in 1920 and joined FIDE in 1926. After the Second World War, Austrian chess officials re-established the organization in its present form in 1946.

Today, the federation coordinates chess activity across Austria’s nine federal states. Around 300 chess clubs belong to the national structure through their respective regional federations. Moreover, approximately 8,000 active licensed players represent these clubs. Therefore, the ÖSB connects local chess communities with national and international competition.

Michael Stöttinger has served as President since October 2022. The federation re-elected him in June 2024. In addition, the ÖSB maintains a national office in Vienna. Its leadership works with regional presidents, commissions, trainers, arbiters, organizers, and federation officials across the country.

The Austrian Chess Federation coordinates Austria’s main national championships. Its program includes standard, rapid, and blitz competitions for open and women’s categories.
