Asociación de Amigos por el Desarrollo del Ajedrez (ASODEA) is a nonprofit chess association established in Seville province, Andalusia, Spain, on June 22, 2017. Its purpose is broader than conventional club competition: ASODEA promotes chess as a tool for education, culture, social inclusion, equality, tolerance, and respect. Accordingly, the association develops chess through tournaments, exhibitions, simultaneous displays, teaching activities, and social and cultural projects. Tournament organization has become the most visible part of ASODEA’s current activity. The association runs and co-organizes FIDE-rated classical tournaments, rapid and blitz events, rating-limited opens, and invitational competitions across Andalusia. Important recurring projects include the Hotel Vértice Sevilla Bormujos festival, the Hotel Vértice Chipiona Mar tournament, the Villa de Zahara Magistral, and other events organized with municipalities, hotels, chess clubs, and the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez. José Antonio Fernández Rodríguez is ASODEA’s principal tournament contact and serves as FIDE International Organizer (IO). He directs the association’s major tournaments and also serves as the current Seville Delegate of the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez, giving him a significant operational role in organized chess across the province. ASODEA completed its principal summer festival in Bormujos from August 21–23, 2026. Its next confirmed event is the 2nd International U2200 Open “Hotel Vértice Chipiona Mar”, scheduled for November 6–8, 2026 in Chipiona, Cádiz.

📜 Development and Chess Mission

ASODEA was created in 2017 with a clearly defined educational and social purpose. From the beginning, the organization identified chess not only as a competitive sport but also as a practical instrument for learning and community development. Its objectives include using chess to support the integration of different social groups and promoting ethical values through the game. To achieve these goals, the association organizes tournaments and exhibitions while also supporting chess instruction and cultural activities. Over time, competitive tournament organization has become an important component of this mission. ASODEA now works with local governments, provincial chess structures, hotels, clubs, and the Andalusian Chess Federation to stage events in several locations across southern Spain.

🏆 International Tournament Activity

ASODEA has developed a recurring tournament calendar with a particular emphasis on accessible FIDE-rated competition. Many events use U2200 or U1800 rating limits, which provide club players and developing competitors with opportunities to play international-rated chess in balanced fields. The association’s official tournament history includes the Hotel Vértice Sevilla Bormujos series, which reached its 7th U2200 edition and 4th U1800 edition in 2025. David Infantes González won the 2025 U2200 tournament, while Carlos Rivero Gil won the U1800 section. The accompanying night blitz tournament was won by Carlos Asensio Miranda. ASODEA also organized the 1st International U2200 Open Hotel Vértice Chipiona Mar from October 31 to November 2, 2025. Andrés Gámez Matamoros won that inaugural edition. Another established project is the Villa de Zahara Magistral. The fourth edition in 2025 was won by IM Alejandro Pérez García, continuing a series designed around stronger competitive chess.

🌟 Hotel Vértice Sevilla Bormujos 2026

The Festival Internacional “Hotel Vértice Aljarafe 4” Sevilla – Bormujos 2026* took place from August 21–23, 2026 at Hotel Vértice Sevilla Aljarafe. ASODEA organized the festival in cooperation with Hotel Vértice, the Seville Chess Delegation, Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez, and the Sports Department of the Ayuntamiento de Bormujos. The program included the 8th International U2200 Open, the 5th International U1800 Open, and the 2nd Trebejo Solidario Night Blitz. The two classical sections consisted of seven Swiss-system rounds and counted for both international FIDE and regional rating. José Antonio Fernández Rodríguez served as Tournament Director, while IA Ismael Nieto González was Chief Arbiter. The U1800 section reached full capacity before the event, reflecting strong demand for the festival.

🌊 Hotel Vértice Chipiona Mar 2026

ASODEA’s next major tournament is the 2nd International U2200 Open “Hotel Vértice Chipiona Mar”, scheduled for November 6–8, 2026 in Chipiona, Cádiz. The tournament is jointly organized by Vértice Hoteles and Asociación de Amigos por el Desarrollo del Ajedrez, with support from the Cádiz chess delegation, Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez, Club Ajedrez Chipiona, and the local sports department. Players will compete over seven Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 80 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. The event counts for both FIDE and Andalusian ratings and is open to federated players rated below 2200 FIDE. The published prize fund is €800, with awards for the leading overall players as well as rating, local, junior, senior, and hotel-guest categories. The tournament has a maximum capacity of approximately 65–70 players, depending on the final organizational allocation.

🤝 Tournament Partnerships

ASODEA regularly builds its events through partnerships rather than operating in isolation. Hotels, municipal sports departments, regional chess authorities, local clubs, and arbiters all contribute to different tournaments. This approach allows the association to organize events in several Andalusian destinations while maintaining a consistent tournament structure. Moreover, collaboration with the Federación Andaluza de Ajedrez helps integrate its competitions into the regional and FIDE rating systems. José Antonio Fernández Rodríguez provides continuity across many of these projects as International Organizer and Tournament Director. His simultaneous role as the Seville Delegate of the Andalusian Chess Federation also connects ASODEA with the wider provincial tournament network.
