Arnhemsche Schaakvereeniging (ASV) is a historic chess club based in Arnhem, Netherlands, founded on October 31, 1891. More than 130 years later, the association remains an active center for organized chess in the city. Its regular playing venue is Dagbesteding Het Pleijwerk on Vlamoven in Arnhem, where ASV holds club competitions, team matches, youth chess, training sessions, and open tournaments. ASV offers chess for a broad range of ages and playing strengths. Members can participate in the internal classical competition, knockout cup, rapid and blitz chess, Fischer Random, external team competition, and special tournaments. The club also provides structured training at several levels, lessons for beginning club players and recreational players, and courses for adults learning chess. 📜 History and Development

Arnhemsche Schaakvereeniging was established in 1891, making it one of the long-established chess organizations in the Netherlands. The club has maintained the traditional spelling Arnhemsche Schaakvereeniging in its official name and uses the abbreviation ASV. Over its history, the organization has developed from a traditional local chess association into a large club with internal competition, external teams, youth chess, training, and public tournaments. In 1972, ASV merged with De Koningsloper, itself the product of earlier Arnhem chess-club mergers. A significant leadership transition took place in February 2026. Erik Wille stepped down after 24 years as President and was named an honorary member. Ariën Hooimeijer became President, while Samantha van Diggelen joined the board as Vice President. The current board also includes Secretary Ruud Wille, Treasurer Niels Mekkes, and Competition Director Wouter van Rijn.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

ASV maintains a substantial youth program. Junior activities take place on Thursday evenings before the senior club competition and combine instruction with practical tournament play. The club’s youth section achieved an important national result in December 2025, when ASV-Arnhem A1 became Dutch U18 club champion in the KNSB Meesterklasse A. The team completed the seven-round championship with 12 match points, finishing ahead of Magnus Leidsche Rijn and DD Den Haag. ASV also provides training for adult members at several levels. Courses are organized in structured groups, while separate lessons are available for beginning club players and recreational players. This creates a pathway from learning the game to participating in internal competition and officially rated chess.

🏆 Tournament Activity

ASV organizes several recurring open events alongside its weekly club program. These include the Voorjaarstoernooi, Vierkampentoernooi, youth tournaments, regional competitions, and the Open Schaakkampioenschap van Arnhem. The Voorjaarstoernooi is traditionally a seven-round rapid tournament attracting around 80 participants. Meanwhile, the Vierkampentoernooi places players into balanced four-player groups for a compact competition over a Friday evening and Saturday. The club also hosts competitions organized together with the regional chess authorities. Its Arnhem premises have been used for championships in rapid and blitz chess as well as national youth-club competition days.

🌟 Open Schaakkampioenschap van Arnhem 2026

The Open Schaakkampioenschap van Arnhem (OSKA) is ASV’s principal classical weekend tournament. The 2026 edition will take place from September 4–6 at Dagbesteding Het Pleijwerk. Players compete over six Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Results count toward both FIDE and KNSB ratings. The tournament is divided into two rating groups. Group A is intended primarily for players rated at least 1800, while players above 1900 cannot enter Group B. The organizer can make exceptions around the rating boundaries. Interest in the 2026 edition has been particularly strong. By August 26, 158 players had already registered against a maximum capacity of 160, including competitors from the Netherlands, Belgium, Curaçao, and other federations.

Ariën Hooimeijer is the current President of Arnhemsche Schaakvereeniging. Samantha van Diggelen serves as Vice President, Ruud Wille as Secretary, Niels Mekkes as Treasurer, and Wouter van Rijn as Competition Director.
