♟️ About the Organizer
AE Lechainon Chess Section, known in Greek as ΑΕ Λεχαινών, is the chess department of Athlitiki Enosi Lechainon, a nonprofit multisport association based in Lechaina, Elis, Greece. The parent association was founded in 1980 to provide sporting activities for children and residents of Lechaina and the surrounding area. Chess became part of the club’s program in late 1982. Since then, players of different ages have represented the association in individual, team, school, regional, and national competitions. The chess section now offers structured lessons for children and adults, internal competitions, practical training games, and preparation for events organized within the Greek federation system. NA Michail Sigouros leads the chess training program and serves as the principal contact for the section’s competitions.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
AE Lechainon organizes classical, rapid, blitz, junior, and team chess competitions in Lechaina, Pyrgos, Kyllini, and other locations in Elis. The club works closely with Pyrgos Chess Academy, which supports tournament promotion, school initiatives, coaching activities, and chess events across the region. One of their principal recurring competitions is Ev Agonizesthai, a summer rapid festival that reached its 15th edition in 2026. The tournament includes an Open Rapid, a separate under-12 competition, individual prizes, team standings, and live-board coverage. The 2026 edition is organized by AE Lechainon under the auspices of Pyrgos Chess Academy, with Christos Diplas as tournament director and Michail Sigouros as chief arbiter. The club also organizes FIDE-rated standard tournaments and regional rapid events, giving local and visiting players regular opportunities to gain competitive and rating experience.
🌱 Chess Education and Regional Development
Youth development remains central to the chess section’s work. Regular Saturday lessons introduce children to chess while helping experienced students improve calculation, strategic planning, concentration, and practical tournament skills. Moreover, the organizers bring chess into schools and community programs through the “Play Chess – Learn Chess” initiative. Pyrgos Chess Academy has delivered these activities in cooperation with schools, teachers, municipal bodies, and regional chess institutions. The partnership also supports school championships, youth rapid events, simultaneous exhibitions, and introductory sessions for new players. Through this combination of instruction and competition, AE Lechainon helps connect grassroots chess in Elis with the wider Greek tournament structure. Michail Sigouros contributes extensive experience as a licensed National Arbiter, chess instructor, player, and tournament official.
