♟️ About A.D. Accademia Scacchi Milano

A.D. Accademia Scacchi Milano, commonly known as Accademia Scacchi Milano, is a major chess association and FSI-recognized Chess School based in central Milan, Italy. The association is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) and operates from the Circolo Culturale “I Navigli” at Via De Amicis 17, where it has been based since January 2011. The Italian sports registry records the current association from November 21, 2008 and, as of August 2026, lists 252 competitive and 70 recreational registered participants, reflecting the considerable scale of its activities. Accademia maintains an unusually broad program covering classical, rapid and blitz tournaments, national team chess, junior development, adult instruction, women’s chess, school projects, cultural activities, and regular club play. Its calendar includes the traditional Torneo Tre Re, Torneo Renato Didoni, Sunday rapid events, Club del Mercoledì evening tournaments, junior competitions, training camps, and FIDE-rated events. The club also operates a successful youth chess school whose teams have repeatedly reached the podium at Italian national junior team championships, including national titles in U10 and U12 in 2021 and U18 in 2023. Francesco Gervasio is the current President and principal organizational contact. Fiorenza Viani serves as Vice President and plays a major role in communications, junior chess, and tournament activity, while Walter Ravagnati is Honorary President and Director of the Youth Chess School. Accademia enters autumn 2026 with a busy program: its TUSAT Under-18 project begins on September 12, Sunday Chess School starts on September 20, and junior courses resume in October. Its main upcoming classical events are the Torneo Angelo Neri from October 30–November 1 and the Torneo Renato Didoni from December 18–20, 2026.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Youth development is one of Accademia Scacchi Milano’s strongest areas. Its FSI-recognized chess school offers structured programs for children ranging from beginners to players competing at regional and national level. For the 2026/2027 season, the program includes the Progetto TUSAT Under 18, Sunday Morning Chess School, Wednesday-afternoon junior courses, and additional advanced training. The club also organizes the Challenge dei Pulcini, giving younger and less experienced players frequent opportunities to enter structured competition. Accademia has produced an extensive list of national junior results. Its teams won the Italian U10 and U12 Team Championships in 2021, while the club captured the Italian U18 Team Championship in 2023. Individual members have also won several Italian age-group titles. Adult development remains important as well. In 2026, the training calendar has included specialist courses and mini-camps led by experienced players and instructors such as IM Mario Lanzani and Massimiliano Botta.

♜ National Team Chess

Accademia Scacchi Milano maintains one of the deeper team structures among Milan chess organizations and regularly enters several squads in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS). For the 2026 season, the club qualified teams across multiple national divisions, including Master, A1, A2, and Serie B. Its leading roster includes strong international and Italian players such as GM Ivan Ivanišević, GM Miroljub Lazić, Francesco Seresin, Massimiliano Botta, Alessio Boraso, and former U18 team champion Leo Titze. Francesco Gervasio remains directly involved in the national team program as organizer and team contact. Consequently, Accademia offers a pathway from beginner and junior chess through local competition to Italy’s highest national team divisions.

🏆 Tournament and Club Activity

Accademia organizes competitive chess throughout most of the year. Its program includes FIDE-rated classical tournaments, rapid and blitz events, evening competitions, internal championships, junior tournaments, and open weekend events. The traditional Torneo Tre Re opens the calendar each January. The 2026 edition ran from January 1–6 with separate Open A, Open B, and amateur competitions. During spring and summer, the club continued with events such as Sunday rapid tournaments, the Tigran Petrosian evening tournament, and the 7th Open Integrale Città di San Leo, held in June 2026. The latter attracted 39 players, with IM Virgilio Vuelban finishing first ahead of GM Stefan Đurić. The autumn program also includes the Club del Mercoledì, whose first 2026/2027 tournament runs from November 4–December 9.

🌟 Torneo Angelo Neri

A new major event in the 2026 calendar is the Torneo Angelo Neri, scheduled for October 30–November 1, 2026 at the club’s Via De Amicis headquarters. The tournament commemorates Angelo Neri, a long-standing and highly respected member of Accademia. It combines Open A and Open B classical tournaments with a junior competition connected to the Italian youth championship structure. The principal sections are FIDE-rated, while the junior event gives younger players another opportunity to combine competitive experience with qualification activity. Francesco Gervasio and Fiorenza Viani are the principal tournament contacts, confirming the direct involvement of Accademia’s leadership in the event.

🌟 Torneo Renato Didoni

The Torneo Renato Didoni is another established Accademia event and commemorates one of the important figures in the club’s early development. The 2026 edition is scheduled for December 18–20 at Via De Amicis 17. Open A is designed for players rated 1600 and above, while additional sections provide opportunities for lower-rated competitors. The main tournaments use five classical rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one and receive FIDE rating where applicable. Together with the Torneo Tre Re and Angelo Neri tournament, the Renato Didoni event gives Accademia a strong sequence of recurring classical competitions across the season.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Francesco Gervasio serves as President of A.D. Accademia Scacchi Milano and remains active as a competitive player, tournament organizer, team captain, and club administrator. The current governing council also includes Gianfranco Cerè, Alberto Viotti, Roberto Montaruli, Pasqualino Gorgoglione, Fabio Borin, Guido Guarato, and Stefan Boer. Beyond competitive chess, Accademia promotes the broader culture of chess through lectures, literature, art, educational projects, and community activities. This combination of competition, education, and culture remains a defining feature of the organization.
