♟️ About the Organizer

Academia de Xadrez da Maia, commonly abbreviated as AXM, is a chess academy and tournament organizer based in Pedrouços, Maia, Portugal. The academy was established in September 2014 as a project dedicated to chess education, player development, and the organization of chess events. Its technical team includes experienced and accredited chess instructors, and the organization works with the Portuguese Chess Federation and the Maia City Council in developing chess within the municipality’s educational and sporting structures. AXM provides chess instruction for children, young people, and adults, helping beginners learn the fundamentals while supporting experienced players who wish to improve their competitive performance.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events

Academia de Xadrez da Maia organizes a wide range of over-the-board competitions, from local school tournaments and rapid events to major international FIDE-rated festivals. Its principal competition is the Maia International Chess Festival, which brings players from Portugal and other countries to the Maia region. The festival program includes the Maia Chess Open – Masters, a separate U2000 tournament, rapid and blitz competitions, masterclasses, women’s events, team competitions, and additional cultural and social activities. The academy also organizes the Maia Blitz Cup, Maia Rapid Cup, Liga Escolar de Xadrez, Liga da Maia, and chess competitions forming part of the Jogos Desportivos da Maia. These events give junior, amateur, titled, and internationally rated players opportunities to compete under professionally managed tournament conditions.

🌱 Chess Education and Community Development

Alongside tournament organization, AXM maintains an active chess-education program across Maia. Its activities have included classes at municipal youth facilities, schools, libraries, and the academy’s own headquarters. The organization promotes chess as a tool for developing concentration, logical reasoning, discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and sporting conduct. AXM has also created initiatives such as AXM Queen’s, which encourages greater participation by girls and women in chess. Through cooperation with local institutions, schools, the Maia City Council, and the Portuguese chess community, the academy has built a pathway connecting introductory lessons, school competitions, club chess, national events, and international tournaments.
