♟️ About A.S.D. J. Richter/LASK Bolzano

A.S.D. J. Richter/LASK Bolzano is a chess club based in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy. The present association was founded on December 3, 2002, through the merger of two Bolzano clubs — Circolo Joseph Richter and LASK, both originally established in 1964. The club is affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI) and participates actively in both Italian national team competitions and the South Tyrol chess structure. Its permanent playing base is at the Centro Sportivo Maso della Pieve (Sportzone Pfarrhof) in Bolzano. The club combines competitive team chess, classical tournaments, rapid and blitz events, internal championships, junior development, school chess, and regular club meetings. Traditional activities include the Torneo Primavera, club championship, rapid and blitz competitions, as well as Wednesday-afternoon chess sessions during the school year. Moreover, Richter/LASK organizes and supports larger FIDE-rated events across South Tyrol, including the Kaltern Trophy in Caldaro and cooperation with the International Chess Tournament “ad Gredine” in Val Gardena. Avv. Stefano Paparella is the current President of A.S.D. J. Richter/LASK Bolzano, having succeeded founding President Attilio Muscolino in 2019. Martin Kowalczyk serves as Vice President and plays a particularly active role in tournaments, team competition, youth activities, and club communications. The club enjoyed a successful 2026 Italian Team Championship season, preserving its place in Serie A2 and earning promotion for another squad. Its principal upcoming tournament is the 9th International Kaltern Trophy, scheduled for October 16–18, 2026 in Caldaro/Kaltern.

📜 History and Development

The history of Richter/LASK reaches back beyond the foundation of the present organization. Both predecessor clubs, Joseph Richter and LASK, were founded in Bolzano in 1964. They merged on December 3, 2002 at the former LASK headquarters in Via Novacella, creating A.S.D. Joseph Richter/LASK Bolzano. Dr. Attilio Muscolino became the first President, while the original board also included Alois Elsler, Sergio Bonseri, Bruno Morlacchi, Johann Mahlknecht, and Rudi Scharrer. From its earliest years, the club maintained an active calendar of internal tournaments and team competitions. It won the top division of the South Tyrol provincial team championship in 2004 and 2011 and has consistently entered several teams across different league levels. After 16 years under Muscolino, Stefano Paparella became President in January 2019 and continues to lead the association.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Chess education forms an important part of Richter/LASK’s activities. The club provides courses and training for both club members and school students, while regular Wednesday sessions at its Pfarrhof headquarters give young and developing players an opportunity for structured practice. During the 2025/2026 school year, Wednesday-afternoon sessions ran from 16:30 to 18:30. Martin Kowalczyk is the principal contact for this program. The club also cooperates directly with local schools. In June 2026, it supported a chess tournament at the German-language A. Stifter middle school, where 22 students competed over five rounds. Young Richter/LASK members Marco Narduzzo and Fabian Krebs were among the participants. In addition, the club hosted the 2026 Trentino-Alto Adige Regional U18 Championship at its Bolzano premises, further strengthening its role in regional junior chess.

♜ Italian and South Tyrol Team Chess

Team chess remains one of the strongest parts of the club’s identity. In the 2026 Campionato Italiano a Squadre, Richter/LASK entered three teams in the main national divisions. Richter/LASK I competed in Serie A2, its first season at that level, and successfully avoided relegation after a demanding six-round group in Falzè. The first team included players such as CM Jonas Unterweger, CM Martin Kowalczyk, Fritz Prosser, Timofey Bodrov, Rainer Demetz, and Ruben Bernardi. Meanwhile, Richter/LASK II produced an excellent result in Serie C, winning its group and earning promotion to Serie B. Richter/LASK III also secured the position required to remain within the national structure after a dramatic final round. The club additionally fields several teams in the South Tyrol Mannschaftsmeisterschaft, maintaining representation across multiple regional divisions.

🏆 Club Tournament Activity

Richter/LASK organizes regular internal tournaments throughout the year. The traditional Torneo Primavera 2026 ran from March 9 to April 27 at the club headquarters. Players competed over seven rounds with a time control of 80 minutes plus a 20-second increment per move. CM Martin Kowalczyk won the tournament for the second consecutive year. The club also stages rapid and blitz events, including a five-round rapid tournament in May 2026. These competitions are often open to non-members, giving players from the wider Bolzano chess community access to regular tournament play. Together with its club championship and team matches, these events create a year-round competitive calendar at Pfarrhof.

🌍 International Tournament Cooperation

Richter/LASK also contributes to larger international chess tournaments outside its own Bolzano headquarters. The club is involved in the 5th International Chess Tournament “ad Gredine”, scheduled for September 11–13, 2026 in Ortisei. The tournament is principally organized by Lia Schach Gherdëina / Schachclub Gröden, with Richter/LASK participating as a cooperating organization. The event features three FIDE-rated classical sections, five rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment, a maximum field of 170 players, and a published €2,500 prize fund. This cooperation reflects the close connections among chess clubs throughout South Tyrol and gives Richter/LASK members access to a broader regional tournament network.

🌟 Kaltern Trophy

The International Kaltern Trophy is Richter/LASK’s principal recurring open tournament. The 9th Kaltern Trophy is scheduled for October 16–18, 2026 at the Vereinshaus / Casa delle Associazioni in Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino (Kaltern am See). The tournament consists of three classical sections: Open A: players rated 1800 and above Open B: players rated 1999 and below Open C: players rated 1699 and below All sections play five Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The tournament has a maximum capacity of 180 players and a published total cash prize fund of approximately €1,500. Registration closes on October 15, 2026. Richter/LASK handles the organization, information, and registrations, while Gerhard Bertagnolli manages the dedicated tournament administration and online tournament page.
