♟️ About Annex Chess Club

Annex Chess Club (ACC) is a chess club and major tournament organizer based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 2010 by Ted Winick, the club operates from 918 Bathurst Street in Toronto’s Annex neighborhood. Its guiding principle is “Chess For Everyone!”, and the club welcomes players of different ages and playing strengths. ACC combines weekly club chess, rated tournaments, instruction, casual play, and the organization of major city, provincial, and national competitions. The club meets regularly on Monday evenings, with tournament play generally beginning at 7:30 PM. Its annual program includes five-round classical Swiss tournaments, the ACC Club Championship, beginner classes, rapid and blitz events, and memorial competitions. In addition, Annex Chess Club organizes or hosts major events on behalf of organizations such as the Greater Toronto Chess League (GTCL) and the Ontario Chess Association. Its tournament portfolio includes the Toronto Open, Toronto Closed, Toronto Blitz Championship, Ontario Open, and Toronto Women’s competitions. Salim Belcadi currently serves as President of Annex Chess Club, while Keith Denning is the Club Manager and the most useful operational contact for tournament and club inquiries. ACC has maintained an exceptionally active program in 2026. It hosted the Toronto Closed from April through June, the Ontario Open in May, and the Toronto Blitz Championship in June. Its next major event is the 2026 Toronto Open from September 5–7, 2026, followed later in September by the annual Ted Winick Memorial.

📜 History and Development

Annex Chess Club was established in 2010 by Ted Winick, a Toronto chess educator and organizer who also founded the Chess Institute of Canada and National Chess Camp. The club originally operated at 918 Bathurst Street. It briefly moved to another location in 2018 before returning to Bathurst Street in 2021, following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Ted Winick died in May 2019, but his influence remains central to the organization. Every year, the club stages the Ted Winick Memorial Tournament around the time of his birthday. The 2026 edition is scheduled to begin on September 28. ACC has also become involved in increasingly significant events. In 2023, it co-hosted the Canadian Transnational with Montreal’s Maplewood Chess Club. In 2024, Annex served as a local partner when Toronto hosted the FIDE Candidates Tournament. Then, in 2025, the club hosted the Canadian Closed on behalf of the Chess Federation of Canada for the first time.

♜ Weekly Chess, Classes and Club Competition

Regular tournament chess forms the core of Annex Chess Club’s weekly activity. Most standard club competitions use a classical 90+30 time control, with players grouped into sections according to rating when appropriate. The 2026 ACC Club Championship began in February and used a six-round Swiss format with separate Championship and Reserve U1800 sections. Other 2026 weekly tournaments have included Seeing Shadows, April Showers, May Flowers, Summer Knights, and the current Back To School tournament. ACC also offers introductory chess instruction. In January 2026, the club ran separate beginner classes for adults and children, covering piece movement, basic tactics, opening principles, checkmate patterns, and tournament fundamentals. The club’s regular events are open to newcomers as well as experienced competitors. Therefore, players can progress from beginner instruction and casual chess into CFC-rated classical competition at the same venue.

🏆 Major Toronto Tournament Organization

Annex Chess Club plays a significant role in organizing major competitive chess events in Toronto. It frequently stages tournaments on behalf of the Greater Toronto Chess League and other chess organizations. The 2026 Toronto Closed ran from April 13 through June 22. It used ten-player round-robin sections, including Championship, Reserve, and Development groups. The classical time control was 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, and Keith Denning served as Chief Arbiter. The club also hosted the 2026 Toronto Blitz Championship on June 29 at 918 Bathurst Street. The tournament consisted of 11 Swiss-system rounds at 3+2 and reached its capacity. The published prize fund was based on a 100-player field, with CAD 700 guaranteed for first place. Earlier in May, Annex also organized the 2026 Ontario Open, a seven-round classical tournament with multiple rating sections.

🌟 Toronto Open 2026

The 2026 Toronto Open is scheduled for September 5–7, 2026 at St. Casimir’s Parish Hall, 156 Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto. The tournament will consist of six Swiss-system rounds played over the Labour Day weekend. Five sections are available: Crown, U2200, U1900, U1600, and U1300. Players receive 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. All sections are CFC-rated, while the Crown, U2200, and U1900 sections are also submitted for FIDE rating. The tournament has a published CAD 7,000 prize fund based on 250 participants, including a guaranteed CAD 1,500 first prize. Additional prizes are available for the leading players in each section and for juniors, seniors, women, and Annex Chess Club members. IA Uttam Dhungel serves as Chief Arbiter, while Keith Denning is the principal event contact.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Annex Chess Club is governed by a Board of Directors. Salim Belcadi currently serves as President. The board also includes Michael Blair, Heidi Gay, Frank Helwig, Hariharan Raghavan, and Michael Sousa. Heidi Gay additionally serves as the club’s Safe Play Officer. Keith Denning works as Club Manager and plays an important role in the day-to-day operation of tournaments, classes, registrations, and major events. He also serves as an arbiter at many Annex competitions. The combination of a permanent central Toronto venue, frequent rated tournaments, educational programs, and major external events allows ACC to serve both its own members and the wider Toronto chess community.
