Melbourne International Open 2026 runs April 14-19, 2026 in Melbourne, Australia, bringing top international and Australian players together for a flagship week of rated competition at the Melbourne Chess Club. The festival features a 9-round classical event split into Masters and Amateurs, with the Masters division designed as a norm event and a strong focal point for titled and aspiring titled players. The organizers also offer separate 9-round Rapid and 9-round Blitz tournaments to round out a full multi-format program.
The event offers an estimated AUD 11,900 in cash prizes across all tournaments and maintains a competitive, fighting atmosphere through strict playing-hall rules and pairing policies. Players compete in ACF- and FIDE-rated tournaments, with structured eligibility thresholds between divisions and a published schedule that supports both serious classical preparation and faster-play opportunities. Fitzroy’s inner-city setting adds convenience for visitors, with dining, public transport, and accommodation options nearby.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings
The Masters and Amateurs divisions run 9 rounds with a 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move time control, and the event rates games for ACF and FIDE. The Masters division runs as a FIDE Title Tournament, and the organizers may transfer players across divisions when needed. The tournament uses Vega for pairings, prioritizes FIDE ratings, and uses ACF ratings when a player lacks a FIDE rating. The default time is 30 minutes after the round start time.
Rapid runs 9 rounds with 13 minutes + 2 seconds per move, and Blitz runs 9 rounds with 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move; both rate for ACF and FIDE.
The event does not accept draws by agreement under 30 moves in Masters and Amateurs. When required, tie-breaks apply in this order: Median Buchholz, Buchholz, Sonneborn-Berger, then ARO. The organizers aim to publish Round 1 draws in the evening before Round 1, and they exclude unpaid players after entries close from the draw.
Byes: Masters allows one half-point bye in Round 1 only. Amateurs allows bye requests subject to approval, with limits that include a maximum of two half-point byes and a maximum total of one point in byes.
