LXXI Campeonato Abierto Mexicano de Ajedrez “Querétaro 2026”
Querétaro hosts the LXXI Campeonato Nacional e Internacional Abierto Mexicano de Ajedrez “Querétaro 2026” on March 31-April 5, 2026 in Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico. FENAMAC and the local chess association run a multi-section championship that welcomes international guests and Mexican players across a wide span of rating bands and age groups. The event combines a flagship open with dedicated rating-limited sections and structured youth groups, all staged in a full-service city hotel setting.
This championship delivers a classic Swiss experience with 9-round and 8-round adult sections plus a 7-round youth program, all played at a steady classical pace. The organizers publish pairings with Swiss-Manager, apply clear tie-break criteria, and enforce strict playing-hall rules on electronics and conduct. Cash prizes reach MXN $1,412,000, and the program also includes youth awards in trophies and material prizes.

The organizers use a 90+30 time control for all sections and enforce a 30-minute default time. Players may request up to three half-point byes in the first three rounds of the International section and up to two half-point byes in the first two rounds of all other sections. The International section also applies a no-early-draw rule and allows draw agreements only after both players complete 25 moves.
The organizers rank tied scores with these tie-breaks, in order: head-to-head, Buchholz, Sonneborn-Berger, Buchholz Cut 1, Median Buchholz, most wins, then younger age.
