FIDE Candidates Tournaments 2026 bring elite world-championship qualification chess to March 27-April 17, 2026 in Peyia (Paphos District), Cyprus. The program features the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 and the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, with each event selecting a challenger for the next World Championship match in its cycle. The double round robin format creates constant top-board tension, because every player faces every opponent twice.

Cap St Georges hosts the competition in a high-end seaside setting on Cyprus’ southwest coast, with infrastructure that supports top-level play, broadcasts, and media operations. FIDE pairs a rigorous competitive framework with a minimum €1,000,000 net prize fund across the two tournaments and a classical time control built for long, deeply calculated games. The event delivers 14 rounds per tournament plus structured tie-break playoffs when first place requires resolution.

Time control

  • FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move 41.

  • FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move starting from move 1.

Default time and late-arrival penalties

  • Candidates: FIDE deducts €500 from a player’s prize money if the player arrives after the actual start time. The player loses by default if the player arrives more than 15 minutes late, without additional financial penalty.

  • Women’s Candidates: FIDE deducts €300 from a player’s prize money if the player arrives after the actual start time. The player loses by default if the player arrives more than 15 minutes late, without additional financial penalty.

Draw rules and tie-breaks

  • Players cannot agree to a draw before Black completes move 40, except through arbiter procedures in cases such as threefold repetition or stalemate.

  • If players tie for first after 14 rounds, FIDE runs a playoff that can include rapid (15+10), blitz (3+2), and a final Armageddon stage if needed.

Pairings administration

  • The Chief Arbiter conducts the draw for pairings and colors in coordination with FIDE’s management not later than four weeks before the start.

  • If a player withdraws after completing 50% or more of games, FIDE scores remaining games as losses by default; if a player completes less than 50%, FIDE annuls that player’s results.
