Schach – Rheinfelden e.V. is a chess club based in Rheinfelden (Baden), Baden-Württemberg, Germany, directly on the German-Swiss border. The club belongs to the Badischer Schachverband and Badischer Sportbund and combines competitive league chess with recreational play, international tournaments, youth development, and community chess. Its regular playing venue is the Bürger-Café Gambrinus at Friedrichstraße 6 in Rheinfelden.

🌉 Cross-Border Chess in Rheinfelden

The location of Rheinfelden gives the club an unusual identity. Germany’s Rheinfelden (Baden) and the Swiss city of Rheinfelden sit on opposite sides of the Rhine, while local chess activity regularly crosses the national border.

Schach – Rheinfelden e.V. cooperates with Swiss partners rather than limiting its activities to German federation competition. As a result, its tournaments commonly attract players from both countries and often use multiple rating systems.

The club also operates a shared “Schachkalender beider Rheinfelden”, which brings together chess dates from organizations on both sides of the border. A new joint web presence at schach-rheinfelden.com has also been launched to strengthen this cross-border chess community.

Regular club chess takes place at Bürger-Café Gambrinus. Members currently meet on Sundays from 15:00 to 17:00 and Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00 for games, analysis, training, and social chess.

🎓 Youth Chess and School Programs

Youth development forms an important part of the club’s community work. Schach – Rheinfelden e.V. works with Schach-Freunde Pelikan to provide chess instruction for younger players, combining basic technique, tactical exercises, and practical games.

Young players also participate in the Aargauer Jugend-Grand-Prix through the club’s Swiss partnership network. Therefore, juniors can gain tournament experience on both sides of the border.

The organization has also supported school chess groups at several institutions, including Freie Waldorfschule Schopfheim, Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium Rheinfelden, and Christian-Heinrich-Zeller-Schule Karsau.

This combination of club training, school chess, and cross-border tournaments provides a practical pathway from introductory chess to regular competitive play.

🏆 International Tournament Activity

Schach – Rheinfelden e.V. is best known internationally for the Standard-Open Rheinfelden, a long-running classical tournament held in cooperation with Swiss chess partners.

The 20th International Standard-Open Rheinfelden is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026 at Campus Rheinfelden, Jahnstraße 1A. Players will contest five Swiss-system rounds using a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move.

The tournament counts for FIDE Elo and German DWZ ratings. The published prize structure includes CHF 400 for first place, CHF 200 for second, CHF 100 for third, plus additional rating-category prizes.

Jörg Hostettler and Michael Neis serve as the tournament-management team. Both are listed as FIDE National Arbiters, representing Switzerland and Germany respectively.

The club also participates in organizing chess in Ascona, Switzerland. The 23rd International Amateur Standard-Open Ascona took place from March 1–7, 2026 at Hotel Ascona, with seven classical rounds and FIDE, Swiss, and German rating calculation. The next Ascona Standard-Open is already scheduled for March 7–13, 2027.

🎯 Club and Recreational Chess

Alongside formal tournaments, Schach – Rheinfelden e.V. deliberately promotes chess as a social and recreational activity.

Its Freizeit-Arena events use an informal arena format and complement the club’s classical tournament program. The club also recognizes achievements within its own playing community, including its annual Player of the Year activities.

This balance between serious rated competition and accessible club chess allows the organization to serve ambitious tournament players, juniors, recreational players, and visitors. Moreover, its cooperation with Swiss clubs gives members access to a broader chess community across the High Rhine region.

Schach-Freunde Pelikan is a Swiss chess organisation based in Rheinfelden in the canton of Aargau. It specialises in organising open tournaments that attract players from Switzerland, Germany and many other countries. The team focuses on well-structured, FIDE-rated events that combine serious competition with a friendly, festival-style atmosphere.

The club is best known for its international opens in Rheinfelden and Ascona. These include the Standard-Open Rheinfelden and the Amateur Standard-Open Ascona. Both are played with classical time controls and triple Elo ratings (FIDE, national and Swiss lists). In addition, Schach-Freunde Pelikan runs rapid tournaments, blitz events, and youth opens in cooperation with regional partners. Therefore, club players, juniors, and hobby players all find suitable formats throughout the year.

At the heart of Schach-Freunde Pelikan is a small, experienced organising team. They pay close attention to details such as clear regulations, punctual rounds, and a warm welcome for guests.
