The German Amateur Chess Championship 2026/2027 – Travemünde Qualifier takes place from February 18–21, 2027, at the Maritim Strandhotel Travemünde on Germany’s Baltic coast. Deutscher Schachbund (German Chess Federation) organizes this qualifying tournament as part of the German Amateur Chess Championship (DSAM) 2026/2027 series. Seven rating groups welcome players at different levels, including participants without club membership.

The main tournament offers five rounds of classical Swiss-system chess from Friday through Sunday. Every section counts toward FIDE Standard Elo and German DWZ. Players compete for prizes and qualification places at the German amateur championship final. An optional blitz event on Thursday evening gives early arrivals another chance to compete. Moreover, the weekend format makes Travemünde a practical destination for players combining chess with travel.

The waterfront tournament hotel hosts both the competition and accommodation. Competitors can reach Travemünde via Lübeck and arrange rooms using the organizer’s hotel booking offer. The official schedule specifies two rounds on Friday, two on Saturday and one on Sunday, followed by the prize ceremony. Players should complete registration and payment early, as the organizers can close entry when the hall reaches capacity.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Every group plays five Swiss-system rounds using the same classical time control. Each player starts with 90 minutes for 40 moves. After move 40, the clock adds 15 minutes for all remaining moves. Players also receive a 30-second increment from the first move. These settings apply to Groups A through G.

All seven groups count for FIDE Standard Elo and German DWZ. The federation uses established rating figures when assigning groups, while the published rules permit certain upward placements based on a higher FIDE Elo or more recent rating. Participants should send eligible group-change requests to the organizer at least five days before the event. A move to a lower group is not permitted under the series rules.

Pairing and Tournament Rules

Playing Detail Rule
Rounds 5 classical games
System Swiss, with separate pairings in each rating group
Ratings FIDE Standard Elo and German DWZ
Default time 30 minutes after the published round start
Tie-break 1 Points scored
Tie-break 2 FIDE Buchholz
Tie-break 3 Sonneborn–Berger
Tie-break 4 Drawing of lots

Players must reach their boards within 30 minutes of each round’s start. The tournament also applies FIDE anti-cheating rules, including possible checks of electronic devices. As a result, players should arrive before the scheduled pairing time and follow the arbiters’ instructions.

🏆 Prize Fund

The organizers award merchandise, shopping vouchers or cash prizes to the seven highest-placed players in each group. The leading three players in each group also receive trophies, while all seven prize winners receive certificates. The official regulations do not assign a single combined monetary value to these awards.

Places one through seven in every group qualify for the DSAM national final. If no woman places among a group’s seven qualifiers, the highest-ranked woman gains an additional qualifying place. Moreover, the top woman in each group receives a separate prize if she finishes outside the first seven. The three most successful chess clubs also receive prizes based on their top four qualifying members’ scores.

♟️ Sections / Groups

The DSAM divides participants into seven playing groups using a tournament rating figure (TWZ). The official rating lists dated November 1, 2026 form the main reference for the 2026/2027 season. This structure gives players a comparable field while maintaining the same round timetable across the venue.

Group Rating Range
Group A TWZ 2101–2350
Group B TWZ 2001–2100
Group C TWZ 1901–2000
Group D TWZ 1801–1900
Group E TWZ 1701–1800
Group F TWZ 1551–1700
Group G TWZ 1550 and below

Players without an eligible rating receive a group assignment from the tournament management. In certain circumstances, a participant with a higher FIDE Elo can choose a corresponding stronger section. The official regulations explain the permitted alternatives and how prior DSAM participation affects group changes.
