♟️ About Florida Scholastic Chess League

Florida Scholastic Chess League (FSCL) is a nonprofit youth chess organization based in Hialeah, Florida, United States. The league focuses on providing structured competitive chess opportunities for school-age players while using the game as a tool for intellectual, social, and personal development. FSCL’s mission is to help young people from different backgrounds learn, grow, and succeed through chess. Its programmes emphasize sportsmanship, respect, critical thinking, diversity, inclusivity, teamwork, and personal responsibility. Competitive results are important, but the organization also places strong emphasis on creating a supportive environment in which children can develop confidence and long-term interest in the game. The league organizes recurring US Chess-rated scholastic tournaments for students from kindergarten through Grade 12. Its annual programme includes regional tournaments, National Chess Day events, seasonal competitions, and the FSCL Super Championship. School teams, individual players, parents, coaches, and volunteers all form part of the league’s wider scholastic chess community.

🎓 Scholastic Chess Development

Florida Scholastic Chess League is designed specifically around the needs of young players. Its tournaments are divided by school grade rather than relying only on rating groups, allowing children to compete against players of broadly similar ages and educational stages. The standard FSCL structure includes K–1, K–3, K–5, K–8, and K–12 sections. This creates a progression from introductory tournament chess for very young students to stronger competition for middle-school and high-school players. FSCL also encourages players to represent their schools. Individual results contribute to personal tournament standings, while school teams compete for separate team trophies. As a result, the events combine individual competition with a strong team element. For many participants, an FSCL tournament is also an introduction to official rated chess. Players learn how to use clocks, follow tournament procedures, record results, interact with tournament directors, and compete under US Chess rules.

🏆 Annual Tournament Program

The league maintains a recurring tournament schedule during the academic year. Its principal events normally include a fall competition, the FSCL South Regional Tournament, and the FSCL Super Championship. In recent seasons, FSCL has also organized its annual National Chess Day Tournament. These events provide another opportunity for Florida students to compete in US Chess-rated games while celebrating chess as part of the nationwide National Chess Day programme. The league’s tournaments generally use a five-round Swiss format with a G/25; d5 time control. Each player receives 25 minutes for the game with a five-second delay after every move. This format allows FSCL to run a full rated competition within a single day. Students play several opponents during the event rather than being eliminated after a loss, which gives every participant a substantial amount of tournament experience.

🌴 FSCL South Regional Tournament

The FSCL South Regional Tournament is one of the organization’s major recurring events. It brings together scholastic players and school teams from South Florida for a full day of US Chess-rated competition. The event has been held regularly at Hialeah Gardens Senior High School, which has become an important venue for FSCL tournaments. Published editions include the 2024, 2025, and 2026 South Regional tournaments, demonstrating the continuity of the series. Players compete in five grade-based sections: K–1, K–3, K–5, K–8, and K–12. The top individual players receive trophies, while leading school teams are recognized separately. FSCL also gives participation medals to every player. This reflects the league’s emphasis on encouraging children to continue playing chess even when they do not finish among the tournament leaders.

🌟 2027 FSCL South Regional Tournament

The 2027 FSCL South Regional Tournament will take place on February 20, 2027 at Hialeah Gardens Senior High School. The competition is open to students from kindergarten through Grade 12 and is rated by US Chess. Five Swiss rounds will be played at G/25; d5. The event again features the established K–1, K–3, K–5, K–8, and K–12 divisions. Trophies are planned for the top five individuals and top five teams, while every participant will receive a medal. The tournament begins with morning check-in before Round 1 starts at 9:00 AM. Remaining rounds follow consecutively during the day, with the awards ceremony taking place after the final round. An active US Chess membership is required. FSCL also offers an annual membership option that includes US Chess membership support, helping families navigate the registration process.

🥇 FSCL Super Championship

The FSCL Super Championship represents another major event in the league’s annual tournament cycle. Like the South Regional, the championship brings together students from several grade divisions for a five-round US Chess-rated tournament. Individual and team awards encourage both personal achievement and school participation. The 2026 FSCL Super Championship was held on April 11, 2026 at Hialeah Gardens High School. Its official event page showed participation on a scale of more than 300 registered guests, illustrating the substantial size that FSCL scholastic tournaments can reach. The next 2027 FSCL Super Championship is scheduled for April 17, 2027, again at Hialeah Gardens Senior High School. It will use the same five-section scholastic structure and G/25; d5 format.

🇺🇸 National Chess Day Events

FSCL also organizes tournaments around National Chess Day, giving young players an additional major event early in the school year. The 2026 FSCL National Chess Day Tournament was held on October 10, 2026. Students competed in K–1, K–3, K–5, K–8, and K–12 sections under the league’s established five-round format. National Chess Day tournaments follow the same inclusive philosophy used throughout the FSCL programme. Strong players compete for trophies, school teams earn collective recognition, and every participant receives a medal. By repeating a consistent tournament format across the season, FSCL allows students to become familiar with competitive procedures and measure their progress from one event to the next.

🏫 School Teams & Coaches

School participation is central to the FSCL model. The league provides dedicated registration procedures for schools and coaches, allowing groups of students to enter tournaments together while remaining attached to their school team. Team awards are offered alongside individual trophies. This encourages schools to build sustainable chess programmes rather than treating tournaments only as isolated individual competitions. Parents, teachers, and school coaches also play an important role during FSCL events. Young players are expected to remain under adult supervision, while coaches help organize teams, equipment, registration, and tournament-day logistics. The league therefore operates not only as a tournament organizer but also as a network connecting students, families, school chess clubs, coaches, and volunteers across South Florida.

🤝 Accessibility & Family Support

FSCL works to keep tournament chess financially accessible. Entry fees for its major scholastic events are kept comparatively modest, while the organization also uses donations and fundraising to support its programmes. According to FSCL, donated funds help maintain tournaments and can also assist some families with membership fees, tournament registration costs, and travel expenses when funding is available. The league also encourages volunteer participation. Parents, teachers, coaches, and students can help with tournaments and school teams, while individuals interested in tournament directing are encouraged to become involved. This community-based structure helps FSCL provide large scholastic tournaments while keeping the focus on children and families.

👥 Leadership

Elizabeth Tejada serves as Commissioner of the Florida Scholastic Chess League and is one of the organization’s principal chess leaders. She is a US Chess-certified Tournament Director and a FIDE International Organizer. Her work in chess education has also received significant recognition, including the UT Dallas Chess Educator of the Year Award in 2014 and a Florida Chess Association Organizer of the Year award. Elizabeth Tejada has been particularly active in scholastic chess within Miami-Dade County and serves as an important point of contact for the league. FSCL’s current leadership also includes Liz Tejada as President, Evelyne Tejada as Vice President, Raymonde Reyes as Secretary, and Erika Holbert as Treasurer. The team combines tournament organization, school chess experience, educational work, and volunteer management to support the league’s activities throughout the year.

♟️ Tournament Standards & Sportsmanship

FSCL publishes detailed tournament rules to help young players understand proper competitive behaviour. The league emphasizes sportsmanship throughout its events. Players are expected to avoid interfering with other games, follow tournament director instructions, and observe appropriate behaviour in the playing hall. Digital chess clocks with delay are preferred, and FSCL events normally use the standard five-second delay associated with their published time controls. Mobile phones must be switched off in the playing area, and players are encouraged to ask a tournament director whenever a rules dispute occurs. These procedures help students learn the standards expected in formal tournament chess while maintaining an environment appropriate for young competitors.

🌱 Community Impact

Florida Scholastic Chess League has built a recurring competition structure that gives South Florida children several opportunities each year to play rated chess. The progression from seasonal events to the South Regional Tournament and Super Championship allows students to gain experience over time. Meanwhile, school team awards encourage chess programmes to grow inside individual schools. FSCL’s broader mission extends beyond producing tournament winners. Through chess, the organization aims to reinforce critical thinking, respect, teamwork, inclusivity, confidence, and good sportsmanship. By bringing together schools, families, coaches, tournament directors, and volunteers, the league has developed a scholastic chess community centered on regular participation and player development.
